Quinn Cook had 16 points and Josh Hairston finished with 13, helping the Blue Devils (11-1) win their fourth straight. They shot 54 percent, held a 50-28 rebounding advantage and used a huge early run and a knack for getting to the free-throw line to take a 30-point lead in the first half.

Duke hit triple digits for the first time this season after scoring 63 points by halftime, its most in a half since its 66-point second half last year against Colgate.

Matt Stainbrook had 18 points to lead the Broncos (5-8). They had their four-game winning streak snapped in decisive fashion and were beaten by an Atlantic Coast Conference team for the first time in program history.

Old Dominion (6-7), spurred on by a raucous sellout crowd and able to match the Tigers physically, was tied 67-all with the Tigers before Denmon hit his fourth 3-pointer with 1:01 on the clock. Denmon added both ends of a one-and-one with 42 seconds left to make it 72-67.

Police name Texas Christmas shooting suspect (Reuters)

GRAPEVINE, Texas (Reuters) ? Dressed in a Santa suit, Aziz Yazdanapah showed up at his estranged wife's home near Dallas during a Christmas celebration with her sister's family, and killed everyone before turning the gun on himself, police believe.

The seven bodies were discovered strewn in the living room area of the Grapevine apartment, amid opened presents and near a Christmas tree.

Police identified the dead on Tuesday as two families connected through a pair of sisters.

Suspected shooter Aziz Yazdanpanah, 58, had been estranged from his wife and two teenage children when they moved out of the family's upscale home in nearby Colleyville earlier this year.

His wife, Fatemeh Rahmati, 56, who was a licensed manicurist at a local salon, as well as their daughter, Nona Yazdanpanah, 19, and their son, Ali Yazdanpanah, 14, were also killed.

In the other family, who were visiting Rahmati's apartment on Christmas morning, were her sister, Zohreh Rahmaty, 58, Hossein Zarei, 59, and daughter Sahra Zarei, 22.

"Aziz is the one that was dressed in the Santa suit, and whom we believe ... to be the shooter at this time," Grapevine Police Lieutenant Todd Dearing told Reuters late on Tuesday.

"It was a family incident, they were all related by marriage or blood," he added.

The dead were found by police answering a voiceless 911 emergency call, authorities said.

Evidence released by police on Tuesday narrowed the time of the shooting down to an 18-minute window between 11:16 a.m. when one of the victims sent an "innocuous" text message and 11:34 when the 911 call was received, Dearing said.

The text message "said something along the lines of 'I'm here, Aziz is here dressed as Santa, trying to be the Dad of the Year,'" Dearing said.

It was not immediately clear who sent or received the message.

'QUIET BUT VERY NICE'

Dearing said investigators do not yet know whether Yazdanpanah arrived at the apartment with the intention of killing his family and in-laws.

"We can't possibly know his full intent," Dearing told Reuters. "We don't know whether he was invited or not invited. It could be that Fatemeh told him he could stop by and drop off presents."

Yazdanpanah's family, Iranian immigrants who had settled in the Dallas-Fort Worth area decades ago, had been fighting foreclosure and had declared bankruptcy on their home, a 3,000-square foot house built in 1990 and recently valued near $350,000, according to public records.

Neighbors said that while bankruptcy and foreclosure proceedings moved through the courts, Yazdanpanah had continued to live in the home on Sycamore Court in Colleyville, which borders Grapevine, known for its upscale suburban lifestyle and situated just a few miles away from the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

He was a friendly man who loved his children, neighbors said.

"They were very good neighbors," said Fred Ditmars, who lived across the street from the family for more than four years. "Quiet but very nice."

Ditmars said Yazdanpanah would watch his house when he and his family were away.

The killings rocked the quiet, festive Dallas suburb dubbed the "Christmas Capital of Texas" and known more for its tourism, Christmas season events, festivals and vineyards than for violence. It was the worst outburst of gun violence in the history of the town, which hadn't seen a homicide since June 2010.

Two pistols were recovered from the home, said Sergeant Robert Eberling of the Grapevine police department, who called it a "gruesome crime scene."

No one was found alive by police arriving at the home, he said.

A memorial organized by Nona Yazdanpanah's best friend is scheduled to take place at Parr Park in Grapevine on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Jameela Barnette Dead: Woman Who Allegedly Sent Pig's Foot To Peter King Killed By Police

An Atlanta woman who allegedly mailed threats to lawmakers was shot and killed by police during an altercation on Christmas Day.

Jameela Barnette, 53, was indicted earlier this year for her supposed involvement in the sending of malicious packages to two New York lawmakers.

Barnette was accused of mailing a pig's foot to the office of Rep. Peter King (R) in April. A note included in the package read "Kiss my black Muslim ass," and referred to King as a "Jew," even though he is Catholic. The incident came in the wake of King's hearings on Muslim "radicalization."

Barnette was also indicted for allegedly sending a fake weapon of mass destruction to the office of New York State Sen. Greg Ball in the form of a bottled liquid labeled "Zyklon B." The substance was eventually identified as perfume oil. The package also included a screed against Jews and Christians and a stuffed toy monkey with Stars of David fastened to it.

Barnette pleaded not guilty to both charges in November in a U.S. District Court in Atlanta, and was later released on $20,000 bond on the condition that she send no more threatening messages and undergo a psychiatric evaluation, Georgia's WSBTV reports. According to CNN, a woman claiming to be Barnette had earlier told New York's WXXA that "she was a grandmother and a Muslim upset with Ball for holding hearings earlier this year on New York City's vulnerability to terrorism."

On Sunday, Cobb County police responded to multiple panic alarms activated at Barnette's residence.

A statement from the Cobb County police claimed that an aggressive Barnette met the responding officer.

"Moments after knocking on the door, a female (who was armed with a knife and handgun) opened it and began assaulting the officer with the weapons," the statement read. "Despite receiving injuries to his arm, the officer was able to use his service weapon to stop the assault."

Barnette died at the scene, while the injured officer was treated on site and released. He has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation of the incident.

Sue Carroll, Daily Mirror Journalist, Dies Of Cancer Aged 58

Daily Mirror journalist Sue Carroll has died aged 58 after a battle with cancer.

She was described as the "Queen of Columnists" by Mirror associate editor Kevin Maguire.

Daily Mirror editor Richard Wallace paid tribute to the journalist, who had been writing a column for the paper for 13 years: "Although we knew this moment would come, it is still a great shock.

"Sue had faced her long and painful illness with enviable fortitude.

"Until the final few days she was still doing what she loved the most: reading the papers and giving her inimitable thoughts on the world around us - with, of course, the odd no-nonsense rant thrown in.

"Sue was part of the heart and soul of the Daily Mirror - and had a direct line to our readers.

"But she was also very close to some of us personally. So first and foremost we grieve a great friend."
Writing about her struggle with pancreatic cancer in March, she said: "For now I have so much to be grateful for. Next week I?m travelling to Spain for a break ? an enterprise which seems to involve military precision when a year ago a holiday required nothing more complicated than throwing some shorts and swimmies into a suitcase."

The columnist last wrote for the paper in August.

In March, she told the Alan Titchmarsh show that her friends' reaction to her diagnosis was "very touching".

?At times like this you think, ?what I could do with now is an angel?. You suddenly find you are surrounded by them ? in the shape of your friends.

?You think you can count friends on one hand, but you have no idea how many people love you. It?s been very touching.

?People help in the most incredible ways and give you their time, they are wonderful. I have treated my friends like therapists.?

China and Japan Currency Deal Not Threat to Dollar Reign

China?s surprise currency deal with Japan does little to chip away at the dollar?s reign as reserve currency, but it could foreshadow an era when the yuan has more global influence.

Prime Minister Yoshiko Noda and President Hu Jintao

Prime Minister Yoshiko Noda and President Hu Jintao

The two countries announced Sunday that they would start direct trading their currencies, instead of using the dollar as intermediary. The move is part of a financial agreement between the two countries following meetings between Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiko Noda and Chinese President Hu Jintao.

China is Japan?s biggest trade partner with annual two-way trade of close to $350 billion, and as part of the agreement Japan will also apply to buy Chinese bonds next year.

?I don?t think this will be regarded as a defining moment,? said Deutsche Bank [DB? Loading...? ? ? () ? ] chief G-10 currency strategist Alan Ruskin.

?There?s enough bilateral trade to justify a direct conversion from the yuan to yen and yen to yuan. While there?s a wider story there of whether it changes the role of the dollar as a reserve currency, that?s much more questionable. It would be a very, very small step in that direction,? he said.

?While there?s a wider story there of whether it changes the role of the dollar as a reserve currency, that?s much more questionable,?
Alan Ruskin
Chief G-10 Currency Strategist, Deutsche Bank

Ruskin said the move by Japan to buy Chinese bonds may be a bigger part of the story than has been portrayed. ?I don?t think of Japan as being comfortable with the Chinese buying more yen assets as a way of diversifying from the dollar,? he said, adding the Japanese would prefer if they also had access to China?s capital markets.

The so-called Dim Sum bond market is about $30 billion and not very liquid. ?Japan wants market intelligence. It can achieve this by quite modest investments of a couple hundred millions dollars, not billions or tens of billions,? writes Marc Chandler, chief currency strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman.

Chandler said the agreement is not heralding decline for the U.S. ?This seems to be a stretch. Japan is not moving in China?s orbit. They recognize each other as rivals.?

Ruskin said China would have to conduct much more open policy in order to make the yuan more influential, and that is unlikely in the near future. ?If the yuan were to start trading independent of the dollar, that would start to shift currency regimes in Asia away from their dependence on the dollar, including the yen,? he said.

The tight peg between the dollar and Chinese yuan has been a source of friction between Beijing and Washington, which sees the close link as depressing the yuan, a disadvantage to U.S. industry. Chinese officials have said they would like to expand the use of the yuan globally and also would like to see the dollar play a less important role.

?We expect the Chinese currency will be internationalized. We?re a long way away from that? said Ruskin. ?You need free convertibility. You need a capacity to invest in highly liquid markets,? he said.

As for the dollar, "if it?s a chip away, it?s a small chip away. What you?ll find over time is there will be multiple chips away at the dollar?s reign as supreme reserve currency. The dollar is losing maybe one percent per annum,? he said, adding the euro was taking up some of the slack. But with the euro zone?s debt issues, the euro may not be much of an alternative for now.

Meanwhile, German Finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble commented on the currency deal. ?These are developments which show us that it?s good we have a unified Europe. United, Europe is the strongest economic area in the world. We have good chances to pursue our interests and the opportunity to implement them in the world,? he said.

Texas-El Paso (5-6) vs. Auburn (8-2) (ET)

GAME NOTES: The Texas-El Paso Miners and the Auburn Tigers will face off in the third-place game of the Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

The game represents just the third meeting between the Miners and Tigers, and the former has won both previous meetings, the last one taking place back in 1986.

UTEP will be playing its fifth game in nine days and enters with a 5-6 overall record. The Miners beat Clemson in the opening round of this tournament before losing to Kansas State, 78-70, its last time out. UTEP led in the second half of that semifinal-round matchup before the Wildcats staged a late comeback to end the Miners' modest three-game win streak. Coach Tim Floyd's preaches sound defense to his squad, and it has responded by holding its previous seven opponents under 70 points.

Jacques Streeter scored a season-high 15 points, including 11 in the second half, to lead the Miners against Kansas State. UTEP has shot 48.8 percent from the field in its two Diamond Head Classic games, while foes have made 38.3 percent of their field goals. Michael Perez has scored in double figures in six of the seven games, averaging 16.6 ppg during the stretch. He tallied a career-high 25 points versus Clemson on Thursday, and Perez is the only Miner to score in double figures in both Diamond Head Classic games. Cedrick Lang has reached double figures in two of the last three outings, and he tied his career-high with 12 points on Friday.

Auburn enters this contest with an 8-2 record after dropping a 64-43 decision to Long Beach State on Friday. The loss snapped a four-game win streak as the Tigers reeled off victories over South Florida, North Florida, Florida A&M and Hawaii before the 49ers knocked them off. LBSU held Auburn to a season-low 26.3 percent shooting from the field and a season-low 43 points. Coach Tony Barbee's team will try to bounce back closer to its season averages of 68.1 ppg and 44.8 percent shooting.

Frankie Sullivan was the lone bright spot for the Tigers in their last outing, as he finished with 22 points and six rebounds. Rob Chubb, Kenny Gabriel and Chris Denson, all of whom own double-digit scoring averages for the season, will need to step up against UTEP to help their team avoid its first two-game losing streak of the year.

The Tigers should be able to recover from their poor outing and get back on track against the Miners. UTEP has been playing well lately, but its rebounding ability is inferior to its counterpart in this one.

Google in Shambles over Android Patents War

The company is accused of denying Java licensing royalties to Oracle, for having copied their code in the design and development of the Android operating system. It is believed the decision to deny a patent claim was the decision of Andy Rubin, the current Head of Google's Mobile Divison, according to a report by allthingsd.com. In addition, Google's Chief Legal Officer, David Drummond, dismissed the patent system as "bogus" and called for its restructuring, when talking about the ongoing patents war.

Like us on Facebook

The maker of the Android software has a portfolio of about 10,000 mobile patents but finds itself under attack from rivals Microsoft, as well as Apple. The former's involvement in the patent wars dates back to when it prevailed over Motorola for a patent on scheduling meetings over mobile phones.

Apple Inc. has its own grudge against Google - probably since the time the former Steve Jobs, Apple's co-founder and former Chief Executive Officer labeled Android a "stolen product". The Cupertino-based company has several patent infringement complaints, including one relating to an option that allows users to switch apps between calls.

Meanwhile, mobile makers HTC face a court-imposed import ban for software patent violations with Apple.

AP Enterprise: Russia oil spills wreak devastation (AP)

USINSK, Russia ? On the bright yellow tundra outside this oil town near the Arctic Circle, a pitch-black pool of crude stretches toward the horizon. The source: a decommissioned well whose rusty screws ooze with oil, viscous like jam.

This is the face of Russia's oil country, a sprawling, inhospitable zone that experts say represents the world's worst ecological oil catastrophe.

Environmentalists estimate at least 1 percent of Russia's annual oil production, or 5 million tons, is spilled every year. That is equivalent to one Deepwater Horizon-scale leak about every two months. Crumbling infrastructure and a harsh climate combine to spell disaster in the world's largest oil producer, responsible for 13 percent of global output.

Oil, stubbornly seeping through rusty pipelines and old wells, contaminates soil, kills all plants that grow on it and destroys habitats for mammals and birds. Half a million tons every year get into rivers that flow into the Arctic Ocean, the government says, upsetting the delicate environmental balance in those waters.

It's part of a legacy of environmental tragedy that has plagued Russia and the countries of its former Soviet empire for decades, from the nuclear horrors of Chernobyl in Ukraine to lethal chemical waste in the Russian city of Dzerzhinsk and paper mill pollution seeping into Siberia's Lake Baikal, which holds one-fifth of the world's supply of fresh water.

Oil spills in Russia are less dramatic than disasters in the Gulf of Mexico or the North Sea, more the result of a drip-drip of leaked crude than a sudden explosion. But they're more numerous than in any other oil-producing nation including insurgency-hit Nigeria, and combined they spill far more than anywhere else in the world, scientists say.

"Oil and oil products get spilled literally every day," said Dr. Grigory Barenboim, senior researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Water Problems.

No hard figures on the scope of oil spills in Russia are available, but Greenpeace estimates that at least 5 million tons leak every year in a country producing about 500 million tons a year.

Dr. Irina Ivshina, of the government-financed Institute of the Environment and Genetics of Microorganisms, supports the 5 million ton estimate, as does the World Wildlife Fund.

The figure is derived from two sources: Russian state-funded research that shows 10-15 percent of Russian oil leakage enters rivers; and a 2010 report commissioned by the Natural Resources Ministry that shows nearly 500,000 tons slips into northern Russian rivers every year and flow into the Arctic.

The estimate is considered conservative: The Russian Economic Development Ministry in a report last year estimated spills at up to 20 million tons per year.

That astonishing number, for which the ministry offered no elaboration, appears to be based partly on the fact most small leaks in Russia go unreported. Under Russian law, leaks of less than 8 tons are classified only as "incidents" and carry no penalties.

Russian oil spills also elude detection because most happen in the vast swaths of unpopulated tundra and conifer forestin the north, caused either by ruptured pipes or leakage from decommissioned wells.

Weather conditions in most oil provinces are brutal, with temperatures routinely dropping below minus 40 degrees Celsius (minus 40 Fahrenheit) in winter. That makes pipelines brittle and prone to rupture unless they are regularly replaced and their condition monitored.

Asked by The Associated Press to comment, the Natural Resources Ministry and the Energy Ministry said they have no data on oil spills and referred to the other ministry for further inquiries.

Even counting only the 500,000 tons officially reported to be leaking into northern rivers every year, Russia is by far the worst oil polluter in the world.

_Nigeria, which produces one-fifth as much oil as Russia, logged 110,000 tons spilled in 2009, much of that due to rebel attacks on pipelines.

_The U.S., the world's third-largest oil producer, logged 341 pipeline ruptures in 2010 ? compared to Russia's 18,000 ? with 17,600 tons of oil leaking as a result, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Spills have averaged 14,900 tons a year between 2001 and 2010.

_Canada, which produces oil in weather conditions as harsh as Russia's, does not see anything near Russia's scale of disaster. Eleven pipeline accidents were reported to Canada's Transport Safety Board last year, while media reports of leaks, ranging from sizable spills to a tiny leak in a farmer's backyard, come to a total of 7,700 tons a year.

_In Norway, Russia's northwestern oil neighbor, spills amounted to some 3,000 tons a year in the past few years, said Hanne Marie Oeren, head of the oil and gas section at Norway's Climate and Pollution Agency.

Now that Russian companies are moving to the Arctic to tap vast but hard-to-get oil and gas riches, scientists voice concerns that Russia's outdated technologies and shoddy safety record make for a potential environmental calamity there.

Gazpromneft, an oil subsidiary of the gas giant Gazprom, is preparing to drill for oil in the Arctic's Pechora Sea, even as environmentalists complain that the drilling platform is outdated and the company is not ready to deal with potential accidents.

Government scientists acknowledge that Russia does not currently have the required technology to develop Arctic fields but say it will be years before the country actually starts drilling.

"We must start the work now, do the exploration and develop the technology so that we would be able to ... start pumping oil from the Arctic in the middle of this century," Alexei Kontorovich, chairman of the council on geology, oil and gas fields at the Russian Academy of Sciences, told a recent news conference.

The same academy's Barenboim said, however, that Russian technology is developing too slowly to make it a safe bet for Arctic exploration.

"Over the past years, environmental risks have increased more sharply compared to how far our technologies, funds, equipment and skills to deal with them have advanced," he said.

In 1994, the republic of Komi, where Usinsk lies 60 kilometers (40 miles) south of the Arctic Circle, became the scene of Russia's largest oil spill when an estimated 100,000 tons splashed from an aging pipeline.

It killed plants and animals, and polluted up to 40 kilometers (25 miles) of two local rivers, killing thousands of fish. In villages most affected, respiratory diseases rose by some 28 percent in the year following the leak.

Seen from a helicopter, the oil production area is dotted with pitch-black ponds. Fresh leaks are easy to find once you step into the tundra north of Usinsk. To spot a leak, find a dying tree. Fir trees with drooping gray, dry branches look as though scorched by a wildfire. They are growing insoil polluted by oil.

Usinsk spokeswoman Tatyana Khimichuk said the city administration had no powers to influence oil company operations.

"Everything that happens at the oil fields is Lukoil's responsibility," she said, referring to Russia's second largest oil company, which owns a network of pipelines in the region.

Komi's environmental protection officials also blamed oil companies. The local prosecutor's office said in a report this year that the main problem is "that companies that extract hydrocarbons focus on making profits rather than how to use the resources rationally."

Valery Bratenkov works as a foreman at oil fields outside Usinsk.

After hours, he is with a local environmental group. Bratenkov used to point out to his Lukoil bosses that oil spills routinely happen under their noses and asked them to repair the pipelines. "They were offended and said that costs too much money," he said.

Activists like Bratenkov find it hard if not impossible to hold authorities to account in the area since some 90 percent of the local population comprises oil workers and their families who have moved from other regions of Russia, and depend on the industry for their livelihood.

Representatives of Lukoil denied claims that they try to conceal spills and leaks, and said that no more than 2.7 tons leaked last year from its production areas in Komi.

Ivan Blokov, campaign director at Greenpeace Russia, who studies oil spills, said the situation in Komi is replicated across Russia's oil-producing regions, which stretch from the Black Sea in the southwest to the Chinese border in Russia's Far East.

"It is happening everywhere," Blokov said. "It's typical of any oil field in Russia. The system is old and it is not being replaced in time by any oil company in the country."

What also worries scientists and environmentalists is that oil spills are not confined to abandoned or aging fields. Alarmingly, accidents happen at brand new pipelines, said Barenboim.

At least 400 tons leaked from a new pipeline in two separate accidents in Russia's Far East last year, according to media reports and oil companies. Transneft's pipeline that brings Russian oil from Eastern Siberia to China was put into operation just months before the two spills happened.

The oil industry in Komi has been sapping nature for decades, killing or forcing out reindeer and fish. Locals like the 63-year-old Bratenkov are afraid that when big oil leaves, there will be only poisoned terrain left in its wake.

"Fishing, hunting ? it's all gone," Bratenkov said.

Telestream announces Instant Replay system for NASCAR officials, gets the checkered HD flag

You may not love NASCAR or understand the sheer thrill of watching cars drive in circles for several hundred laps, but you've got to respect the technology. Today, Telesteam announced its Instant Replay system for NASCAR race officials. The multichannel video player, which will debut at the start of the 2012 race season, provides instant capture and display of up to 18 high-definition 720p camera feeds and will allow officials to quickly view detailed information about on-track aspects of the race. The system uses Telestream's Pipeline HD video capture system to simultaneously acquire multiple camera feeds in Apple ProRes 720p as well as other HD and SD formats before delivering them to shared storage. Once captured, the video streams can be viewed from different camera angles with quick locations being customized for each race. Telestream will be demoing the instant Replay system at the Sports Video Group's League Technology Summit in New York City this week, and to celebrate, the governor has mandated that all vehicles make only left turns through Sunday. Kidding.

Satellite tracks Olympic site from space

What a difference two years can make, especially when you're getting ready for the world's biggest sporting event: This before-and-after slideshow features satellite imagery of London's Olympic Park, the central site for the 2012 Games.

We're presenting the scene as two separate pictures, showing the north and south side of Olympic Park. In each picture, the view on the left was captured by the GeoEye 1 satellite on Sept. 21, 2009, from a height of 425 miles (684 kilometers). The same satellite snapped a picture of the same place on Aug. 3, 2011, and that's what you see on the right side of the screen.

Move the slider at the bottom of the picture to the left or the right for a full comparison of the views, or use the "See Before" and "See After" to switch between the views.

The first image in the slideshow shows the northern end of the park: There's been a lot of work done on the International Broadcast Center, the structure with a light-colored roof on the left side of the screen. The Handball Arena is the smaller, squarish building to the south of the media center in the 2011 photo.

The white-roofed, blocky building on the right side of the River Lea is the Basketball Arena, which didn't exist in 2009. Farther to the right, the Olympic Village is taking shape, just to the north of the Stratford International rail station.

The 2011 view still shows a bare spot on the left side of the river where the Hockey Center will go, but lots of progress has been made on landscaping.

The second image shows the southern end of the park, highlighted by the Olympic Stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies will be conducted. On the right side of the screen, you can see how much work has been done on the rounded-roofed Aquatics Center and the Water Polo Arena just to the north.

To learn more about the buildings and the buildup for the Olympics, check out the NBC Olympics website, Universal Sports' photo gallery and London 2012's Olympic Park map. The Games begin on July 27.

(AP) ? Egyptian soldiers clashed with hundreds of rock-throwing protesters in central Cairo for a second consecutive day on Saturday, hurling stones from rooftops and firing water from hoses in a crackdown that has left at least eight people dead.

The violence has brought to the fore the simmering tensions between security officers and activists demanding an end to military rule, and threatened to spark a new cycle of fighting after deadly clashes between youth revolutionaries and security forces in November that lasted for days and left more than 40 dead.

Early Saturday, hundreds of protesters hurled stones at security forces who have sealed off the streets around the country's parliament building with barbed wire and large concrete blocks. Soldiers on rooftops pelted the crowds below with stones, prompting many of the protesters to pick up helmets, satellite dishes or sheets of metal to try to protect themselves.

Stones, dirt and shattered glass covered the streets between the two sides, while flames came out of the windows of a two-story building set ablaze near parliament, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky.

Witnesses said soldiers wielding wooden sticks and dressed in riot gear chased protesters through the streets, forcing them to retreat to nearby Tahrir Square, which served as the epicenter of the uprising that toppled longtime leader Hosni Mubarak in February.

Later, soldiers stormed into Tahrir to disperse the protesters, and set fire to their tents. A huge cloud of black smoke hung over downtown Cairo as the tents burned.

There were reports of live gunfire from the rooftops, and the MENA state news agency said at least eight people have been killed and around 300 people injured in the two days of clashes.

Egypt's prime minister acknowledged that people had died from gunshot wounds, but denied the military and the police fired at protesters instead said "a group came from the back and fired at protesters" and said that his government is for "the salvation of the revolution."

The violence first began late Thursday after soldiers stormed an antimilitary protest camp outside the Cabinet building near Tahrir Square, expelling demonstrators demanding an end to military rule and an immediate transfer of power to a civilian authority. Witnesses said troops snatched a protester, taking him into the parliament building and beating him.

The soldiers later moved in, burning protesters' tents. Video footage and pictures showed military police in uniform dragging female protesters from hair, beating men and occupying rooftops of the Cabinet building.

The military took over after longtime President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a popular revolt in February. Rights groups and activists charge that the military is carrying on the practices of the old regime, including arresting and beating dissidents.

Funerals were expected Saturday for those killed a day earlier. Among the dead was Sheik Emad Effat, a cleric from Al-Azhar, Egypt's most eminent religious institution. Effat had taken a pro-revolutionary position, criticizing the military and issuing a religious decree forbidding voting for former members of the regime in elections. He was shot in the chest after joining the protesters outside the Cabinet.

Many Egyptians have grown increasingly wary of the military and frustrated with its handling of the country's transition period, and activists accuse the ruling generals of trying to hang on to power.

El-Ganzouri, a Mubarak-era politician who was named prime minister few days after violent protests broke out last month, blamed demonstrators for fueling the latest clashes by demolishing a wall of the Cabinet building, setting fire to the building and smashing surveillance cameras.

He said that the military forces guarding the building from inside have not been taken part in the clashes. He added that protesters are not "the pure revolutionaries" he knew, saying "a 12-year old boy can't be a revolutionary."

"I feel very sad and in so much pain," he told reporters in a press conference aired on Egyptian state TV. "I stress here that the armed forces didn't engage with protesters and didn't leave the building."

Mustafa Ali, a protester who was wounded by pellet shot in clashes last month, on Saturday accused the ruling generals of instigating the violence to "find a justification to remain in power and divide up people into factions."

In a statement read on state TV Friday night, the ruling military said its forces did not intend to break up the protest and said officers showed self-restraint, denying the used any gunfire. It said the clashes began when a military officer was attacked while on duty and protesters tried to break into the parliament compound.

The young activists who led the protests against Mubarak have not translated that success into results at the polls, where Islamist parties won a clear majority of seats in the first round of voting last month over the more liberal parties that emerged from the uprising. Results from this week's second round are expected in the coming days, with the rest of the country set to vote next month.

Images of troops protecting polling centers and soldiers carrying the elderly to the polls have served to boost the military's image as guardians of the country. The military remains the ultimate authority on all matters of state in absence of a president.

The second round of voting took place Wednesday and Thursday in nine of the country's 27 provinces. It covered vast rural areas where the religious stand of Islamist parties has strong support.
