the cotinuing saga of the max adams texas republicans primary cheat sheet

After exhaustive study, and this is no small thing, being new to Texas and having to bone up on everything as a noob, and knowing full well I am a noob so may be making some glaring errors ? point it out please before Tuesday if I am ? I have come to conclusions about Republican candidates in upcoming primaries.

It?s important to do this because voting is next Tuesday and I figure it doesn?t do a whole hell of a lot of good to send someone to Washington as president if you don?t also send other people to DC that will back him up. And that means state support too. Because one of the big conflicts between federal and state government is the clash of federal power with state power. Don?t believe me? Look at all those medical marijuana facilities getting raided by the feds. Cancer patients can do medical marijuana in California, according to California state law. But the feds keep breaking down doors anyway. Not to mention since I?m shoving for a return of state power, well, maybe I better get cracking on what?s happening in the state. Sheesh. So many politics. So little time.

THE MAX ADAMS REPUBLICAN TEXAS PRIMARIES CHEAT SHEET

President: Ron Paul.

United States Senator: Glenn Addison: Addison?s the one guy staunchly in favor of constitutional rights. Like, not getting beat to shit when you peacefully protest and not getting thrown in jail for the rest of your life without charges or a lawyer or a trial. He?s anti-war. And he?s the one guy vocally supporting Ron Paul.

District 10 Rep: Eddie Traylor. Technically Traylor is not good. But his opposition is Michael McCaul. McCaul=CISPA. Throw that bastard out and vote Traylor.

District 17 Rep: George Hindman. I don?t really like Hindman either, he appears to be pro war. But he?s good on the Constitution and protecting citizen?s rights and his opposition is Bill Flores. Flores supports NDAA. Throw that bastard out and vote Hindman in.

District 21 Rep: Richard Morgan. Richard Morgan is all good. Yay! Also one of his opposers is Lamar Smith. Lamar Smith=CISPA. Vote that bastard out and vote Richard Morgan in.

District 25 Rep: Uncommitted. I can?t find anyone with any redeaming qualities running in this one. Several of them are flat out bad, and a couple of them I just can?t find info on online. Sorry District 25. You guys are screwed unless you come up with a write in candidate.

District 35 Rep: Rob Roark. Rob Roark is all good. Yay!

Railroad Commissioner: Becky Berger. Becky Berger has the smartest, most well written explanation and justification for why she should be the Railroad Commissioner. She?s also the best educated and qualified by her background. And she?s not a career politician, a lawyer, or one of Rick Perry?s appointees. [As far as I am concerned, if you are one of Rick Perry's people? That is a black mark.]

Railroad Commissioner Unexpired Term: Barry Smitherton. This is really a default choice because Elizabeth Murray-Kolb appears pro-fracking [wtf!] and the other two guys look bad. So Smitherton is one of those ?do the least damage? choices.

Place 2 Justice Supreme Court: Steve Smith
. Steve Smith gets a star from me and his opposition Don Willett is a Bush/Perry crony. Vote that bastard out and vote Steve Smith in.

Place 4 Justice Supreme Court: Uncommitted. David Medina is a Perry person. John Devine looks bad. And I can?t find anything about Joe Pool Jr. online to give me much of an idea about him.

Place 6 Justice Supreme Court: Nathan Hecht. He?s running unopposed and looks okay.

Presiding Judge Court of Criminal Appeals: Uncommitted. Sharon Keller is running unopposed. There?s a lot of nasty baggage here, going back to an appeal she refused to look at, saying, ?We close at 5.? Granted, the guy being appealed for by his attorneys appears to have been a real monster who had already lost two appeals, but this sort of response is not necessarily what you want sitting on the bench if your loved one, or you, are on death row.

Place 7 Judge Court of Criminal Appeals: Barbara Parker Hervey. Running unopposed. Looks okay.

Place 8 Court of Criminal Appeals: Elsa Alcala. Running unopposed. Looks okay. You should check out this woman?s back story too. It?s pretty amazing.

District 5 Member State Board of Education: Steve Salyer. Steve Salyer gets a star from me.

District 10 Member State Board of Education: Rebecca Osborne. She?s a teacher, she?s very well educated with a PhD, she?s strongly involved and very pro the students. She gets a star from me.

District 14 State Senator: Uncommitted. Guy Fielder is running unopposed and I just can?t find enough information on him online to form an opinion there. Sorry Fielder, might want to work on that internet presence.

District 21 State Senator: Grant Rostig. Grant?s a Ron Paul supporter. Yay!

District 24 State Senator: Uncommitted. Troy Fraser is a natural resources guy and I couldn?t find info much outside of that on the guy.

District 25 State Senator: Anyone but Jeff Wentworth. Seriously. The guy was a spook, a lawyer, and now looks like a careerist politician. That?s not a good combo. His opposition is Donna Campbell, who looked bad, and Elizabeth Ames Jones who pretty much wins by default not because she?s great, but because she?s the least bad. But looks pretty establishment generic. Oh well.

District 47 State Representative: Paul Workman. He is anti NDAA, which is good, though he looks a little gun rabid. Oh well. This IS Texas. Everyone is gun rabid. His opposition is Ryan Downtown who is seriously establishment. Establishment status quo is bad. Vote that bastard out and vote Paul Workman in.

District 48 State Representative: Robert Thomas
. Robert Thomas is firmly anti-NDAA. Though tragically I have lost the link that demonstrates that. Oops. Also running unopposed.

Place 2 Justice 3rd Court of Appeals: Jeff Rose. Running unopposed. Looks okay.

Place 3 Justice 3rd Court of Appeals: Madeleine Connor
. She looks solid and her opposition Scott Field doesn?t.

Place 5 Justice 3rd Court of Appeals: Uncommitted. David Puryear is running unopposed there. Just couldn?t find enough on him to make a solid estimation.

Place 6 Justice 3rd Court of Appeals: Bob Pemberton
. Bob Pemberton looks all good. Yay!

Sheriff: Raymond Frank. Frank is a Ron Paul guy. Yay! He also says he is against the misuse of tasers. Double yay!

County Tax Assessor-Collector: Vik Vad. He?s running unopposed. He seems okay.

Precinct 3 County Commissioner: Ira Yates. It took a lot of digging to find info on Ira Yates and I was kind of despairing and then I found info and bam, he got a star for massive expertise and hands on personal and professional experience.

Precinct 2 Constable: Toby Miller. He wins because he looks okay and his opposition Harrera appears pro war on drugs. Ugh.

Precinct 3 Constable: J Miller. He wins because I can?t find much on his opposition and he?s got a long track record in law enforcement that looks decent and he?s also done lots with K9 units. [I trust dog people over most other people. Right or wrong, it's a character fluke. Sorry.]

There are four issues on the ballot. I?m for school choice, for repealing the mandatory purchase of health insurance that?s unconstitutional, for prohibiting government restriction of public prayer, not because I?m big on public prayer but because I think it?s a freedom of speech issue and I?m pro freedom of speech. I?m still studying this balanced budget thing and don?t know much about what that?s about. And I don?t know much about this redistricting issue. Though historically, redistricting is usually an establishment tool used to disenfranchise opposition so I?m not big on it generally. But I have to study more.

So that?s it. The cheat sheet to date. Do with it what you will.

Love and Kisses,

Your See You At The Polls Adams Girl

Tony DeMarco

Baseball Expert Tony DeMarco has been covering the big leagues since 1987, and been casting Hall of Fame ballots for the last 14 years. He answers questions weekly here:

Q: Who is going to be a better major league player, Bryce Harper or Mike Trout? Are there any young players more exciting than these two?
? Danny Bender, New York

A. You can't go wrong here. At this point, there is every reason to believe both will be superstars soon enough.

Trout, born Aug. 7, 1991, is a bit more experienced and ready not only to be an everyday player, but to carry the load for his team. His time in the majors last season helped, as many players say that once you go back to the minors and return to the majors, everything is more familiar and easier.

Look at Trout's improvement from 2011 to 2012:

2011
40 games, 135 plate appearances: .220 BA/.281 OBP/.390 SP, 5 HR, 16 RBI, 4 SB.

2012 (through Monday)
21 games, 92 plate appearances: .350/.413/.600, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 6 SB.

The prevailing opinion on Trout projects him as a .300 hitter/20-25 homer/40-50 steal player who could be a Gold Glove-caliber defender.

Trout's blazing speed could keep him leadoff for a long time, ala Rickey Henderson. But as he gets older, Trout also could drop to third in the order. But either way, he should be among the league leaders in runs scored.

As long as defensive whiz Peter Bourjos stays with the Angels, Trout will be a corner outfielder. And when the Trout LF-Bourjos CF-Mark Trumbo RF combination debuted Monday, the "outfield of the future" label quickly was attached. But Trout certainly has the speed and ability to be an outstanding center fielder.

Harper, born Oct. 16, 1992, has one less year of professional experience than Trout, so he's more of a work in progress ? especially defensively, as he hasn't played much outfield. Remember, he was a catcher for much of his amateur career.

Harper's power potential projects as a No. 3-4 hitter, and in fact, he recently joined this illustrious group of teenagers who hit big-league homers on back-to-back days: Mickey Mantle, Harmon Killebrew, Tony Conigliaro, Gary Sheffield and Ken Griffey Jr.

But what has been equally impressive about Harper's early big-league experience is how well-rounded his game is ? speed, powerful throwing arm, aggressive base-running, etc. Harper projects as more of a .300 hitter/40-45 homer/25-30 steal type.

Nobody really knows what these two are capable of doing in the future. But it's sure going to be fun to watch and see how they develop.

Q: Since the Orioles still are in first place in the AL East, should they look to push stud pitcher Dylan Bundy to the majors sooner rather than later?
? Mike, Baltimore

A: We're talking about separate issues here. No prospect ever should be rushed just because of the big-league team's place in the standings. And that's certainly not going to be the case here, as Bundy is in low-A ball, far from the majors at this point.

For the uninitiated, Bundy ? born Nov. 15, 1992 ? was the fourth-overall pick in the June 2011 draft, behind fellow pitchers Gerrit Cole, Danny Hultzen and Trevor Bauer.

Bundy's numbers for the Dalmarva Shorebirds of the South Atlantic League are among the most eye-popping I can remember: 30 innings, 5 hits, 2 walks, 2 HBP, 40 strikeouts. Ridiculous, right?

But again, he was pitching in high school a year ago at this time, and a likely promotion or two still will top him out at the Double-A level this season. Maybe we'll see Bundy in an Orioles uniform in 2013 at the earliest, but only if his success continues as he rises through their system.

As for the Orioles' early success this season, most signs are pointing to an upcoming regression, especially considering their AL East competition. A run differential of +12 through Monday points to a 23-20 record, rather than the Orioles' 27-16 mark.

The staff's ERA of 3.58 also is on the rise. We're already seeing hot April starters Jason Hammel and Wei-Yin Chen take a few lumps of late, and five relievers currently have ERAs of well under 2.00 ? unlikely to continue.

The good news is the offense should continue to be productive, led by AL MVP contender Adam Jones, Matt Wieters and Nick Markakis, so a winning season certainly is a possibility. And given pre-season expectations, that should be considered a great step forward for the organization if it happens.

Q. Derek Lowe is pitching out of his mind and the Cleveland Indians are in first place. Can either keep it up?
? John Lawson, Cleveland

A. Probably not in either case. But that doesn't mean Lowe won't have a solid season, or the Tribe won't stay in the AL Central race ? at least as long as the Tigers keep stumbling around .500.

Remember, the Tribe finished 80-82 last season, so a jump to the 90-win mark isn't a huge stretch, especially with one of the game's underrated managers in Manny Acta in charge.

However, through Monday, the Indians had a run differential of -4 despite being five games over .500. Occasionally, a team can win a division with a negative run differential ? the 2007 Diamondbacks (90-72, -20 run differential) are a recent example ? but it's very difficult. The 2005 Padres also did it, but won the NL West with an 82-80 mark and a hard-to-believe -42 run differential.

At this point, the Indians are middle-of-the-AL-pack in terms of team offense and pitching, and besides Lowe, Asdrubal Cabrera, Jason Kipnis and closer Chris Perez, the individual numbers are nothing special.

But they are fourth in the majors in on-base percentage, and they're staying healthy ? with only one use of the disabled list (Rafael Perez) since Grady Sizemore's spring loss.

A series this week against the Tigers ? the teams' first meeting in 2012 ? isn't crucial, but could indicate how that very important season series will go.

As for Lowe, give him credit for rebounding from a terrible (9-17-5.05) 2011 season in Atlanta and doing what he's done ? first in the AL wins, second in ERA ? as his 39th birthday approaches on June 1.

However, Lowe's strikeout rate is alarmingly low even for an extreme sinkerball pitcher ? only 15 Ks in his first 58.2 innings (as opposed to 18 walks), and that doesn't bode well. But you can be sure Acta will be satisfied if Lowe amasses close to 200 innings with anything lower than a 4.00 ERA.

Film effects company DDMG plans Abu Dhabi studio

(AP) ? The American special effects company that brought the "Transformers" movies to life and recently wowed concertgoers with a performing hologram of late rapper Tupac Shakur is setting up a studio in oil-rich Abu Dhabi.

The deal signed Monday between Digital Domain Media Group and Abu Dhabi's government-backed twofour54 deepens the Emirati capital's ties to Hollywood as it accelerates its efforts to become a media hub.

Port St. Lucie, Fla.-based Digital Domain plans to establish an animation, visual effects and motion-capture studio and a media school in Abu Dhabi as part of the deal. The wealthy emirate is providing $100 million in grants for the project.

Although several movies have been filmed in the Middle East ? including last year's "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol," set partly in Dubai ? it is the first time an international studio is laying down such deep roots in the region, said Wayne Borg, twofour54's deputy CEO and chief operating officer.

"I think it's a real game changer for the region in terms of giving us a seat at the table," he said by phone from the Cannes Film Festival, where the deal was signed. "Historically we've never had the access and exposure to a company like that in the region."

Digital Domain expects to begin hiring immediately and start work at the studio by early next year. The aim is to produce animated feature films, visual effects and other content both for the region and for international productions.

Over time, it plans to employ about 500 people in Abu Dhabi. A 150,000 square foot (14,000 square meter) production center is slated to open in twofour54's main media campus by the end of 2015.

Borg doubts Abu Dhabi's conservative Islamic culture will influence Digital Domain's work in the region, saying the U.S. company will be producing "mainstream content ... for the international market."

Neither company disclosed how much Digital Domain is kicking in. But Digital Domain Chairman and CEO John Textor said in an interview his company would make "a material capital expenditure" to the project.

"Traveling around the world and collecting grants is not a business model," he said. "We're not going to Abu Dhabi just to say we've got our toe in the water," he added, saying the planned Gulf center could end up employing roughly as many people as its Florida headquarters.

Digital Domain has worked on more than 90 films, including "Titanic," ''TRON: Legacy," and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," where it digitally added decades to Brad Pitt's character. Filmmaker James Cameron helped found the company in 1993.

It recently made waves for producing an eerily lifelike hologram of late rapper Tupac Shakur that appeared to perform alongside Snoop Dogg at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California.

It has studios in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Florida, Vancouver, Mumbai and London, and is setting up operations in Beijing.

Among its shareholders is Flag Holding, a little-known investment company in Abu Dhabi. Flag's managing partner, Ahmed Ali al-Sarkal, said the private equity house is about two years old and consists of a small group of unnamed fellow investors.

Abu Dhabi controls the bulk of the oil in the seven-member United Arab Emirates, OPEC's third-largest producer. It is investing hundreds of millions of dollars to carve out a niche in the global media industry.

It set up a company in 2008 to partially bankroll Hollywood films, and has wooed major media brands such as CNN, the Financial Times and Cartoon Network to set up operations in the emirate. Sky News Arabia, a new pan-Arab news channel, began broadcasting from Abu Dhabi last month.

The sheikdom now wants to entice more filmmakers to shoot there. It is launching a new program this week to offer producers a rebate of up to 30 percent of what they spend on making movies, television shows, commercials and music videos in the emirate.

How to Avoid Becoming a Bad Plastic Surgery Statistic

Have you seen Freddy Krueger? He can be the perfect example of an imperfect cosmetic operation. No patient would want to have a botched nose job or a flat Breast Lift. New York has its share of plastic surgery horror stories, but those can be minimized with some steps.

To start off, you have to make sure that your surgeon is a certified one. He or she must have passed his boards, meaning the requirements and standards set by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or ABPS have been met. This will let you know that your surgeon has undergone complete and proper training and has the needed experience which makes him or her qualified to operate on you. Skipping this step may lead to a colorectal surgeon performing yourbreast lift. New York is a great city, but you would not want an unqualified surgeon using a scalpel on your body.

Another plus point for your plastic surgeon is to be part of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or ASPS.

Aside from the ABPS requirements, ASPS encourages its members to study further. This ensures that they are well-informed about the developments and improvements in various cosmetic surgery techniques.

You may be attracted to the cheap prices and the promise of really good results from surgeons abroad. However, you may end up spending more on any kind of plastic surgery like liposuction or a breast lift. New York may be your best bet or somewhere local to have proper follow up check-ups from your surgeon.

Clich? as it is, honesty is the best policy and this also applies to undergoing cosmetic surgery. Inform your surgeon about your entire medical history if needed. Provide a list of medications, supplements, vitamins, medical conditions, and anything that could possibly affect the outcome of your operation. Vices such as smoking and drinking should also be mentioned.

When torn between two different surgeons, pick the more conservative one. Choose to have multiple operations instead of wanting to have multiple body parts altered in a single go. Do not try to convince your surgeon to remove or change more than what was discussed as this may lead to unwanted results.

In addition, consulting a specialist can be rewarding. Let's say a surgeon specializes in breast lifts, while another is a general plastic surgeon, meaning he or she can perform any kind of cosmetic surgery, but has no specialization. Choose the former especially if you desire a breast lift. New York can be a great source of specialists if you know where to find them. It's better to have a specialist because you are assured that they have had more training and experience.

Always listen to your surgeon especially when he discusses the possible risks and effects during and after your surgery. Don't hesitate to ask questions and scrutinize all the forms that you are required to complete.

Whether or not you follow all the steps here, cosmetic surgery can be risky, so better do all that you can to ensure your own safety.

Italy arrests two in school bomb attack

Italian police have arrested two suspects over the bombing of a school that killed a 16-year-old girl and seriously injured five more teenagers, media reports said here Sunday.

The men were identified from security cameras at the vocational school in the southern city of Brindisi, where the bomb ripped through a group of students as they waited to begin classes early Saturday.

One of the suspects is an ex-soldier with knowledge of electronics, the daily Corriere della Sera reported, citing local news website Brindisireport.

Melissa Bassi died from her injuries in hospital, an only child from a working-class family who was studying to be a social worker.

Another young victim was fighting for her life after suffering extensive injuries to her chest, and another was badly wounded in the legs.

Italy's flags flew at half mast and the Adriatic port city held the first of two days of mourning as Pope Benedict XVI condemned the bombing as "despicable" and said he is praying for Bassi.

Public prosecutor Marco Di Napoli said there was clearly "a wish to carry out a massacre," while playing down speculation that terrorist, foreign or mafia figures could be behind the attack.

"We are far from knowing the truth only 24 hours after" the attack, which has not been claimed, he admitted at a news conference.

"All possibilities remain open," he said, but added: "The most likely hypothesis is that of an individual and isolated act. It's not impossible that it was the work of a single person."

He said police had a photofit of the assailant, whom he described as an "adult man who does not appear to be a foreigner," after security cameras captured "terrible images" of him detonating the bomb.

The person or persons who carried out the attack were familiar with the school's routines and had chosen the precise moment to strike, he said, emphasising that they were "expert at electronics."

"It could be the act of someone at war with the rest of the world or who has psychological problems," he said.

Police have searched the suspects' homes, Corriere reported.

Italy was in shock after the bombing, which revived memories of attacks by political militants and powerful mafia groups.

As people came to the school to lay flowers and attach messages to the perimeter fence, head teacher Angelo Rampino expressed incomprehension over the tragedy. "It is the first time in Italy that a school has been attacked. The entire country must rise up. We cannot accept this."

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti condemned the bombing as tragic and criminal, on the sidelines of the G8 summit in the United States.

The victims were all scorched by the blast, caused by three gas canisters and a timer, with doctors and witnesses describing flying shrapnel and their blackened bodies on the ground.

Thousands of young people spontaneously took to the streets of Italy's main cities in emotional demonstrations against the violence, which many protesters blamed on a rising climate of social tension linked to a severe economic crisis.

The region where the attack took place is a hub of the Sacra Corona Unita (United Sacred Crown), a local mafia that has been under pressure from investigators in recent years and whose influence is seen as being on the wane.

The group, which is heavily involved in drug-running and arms smuggling through the Balkans as well as human trafficking, is believed to be behind a separate bomb attack in the region earlier this month against an anti-mafia campaigner.

Observers pointed to the fact that the school is named after Francesca Morvillo, the wife of famous anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone, who was assassinated with her husband and three bodyguards by a mafia bomb 20 years ago on Wednesday.

But officials have cautioned that it is unlikely the Sacra Corona Unita would target civilians in its own territory and said the device used was not sophisticated enough for an organisation that has easy access to explosives.

At a demonstration in Rome on Saturday, several participants said the bombing was reminiscent of attacks carried out by far-right and far-left militants in the 1970s and 1980s in a period known as the "Years of Lead".

Also reviving those memories, an Italian anarchist group claimed responsibility for shooting and wounding Roberto Adinolfi, the head of nuclear energy company Ansaldo Nucleare, earlier this month.

The Informal Anarchist Federation (FAI), has claimed dozens of attacks since 2003 including letter bombing campaigns that have targeted then-European Commission president and Deutsche Bank chief Josef Ackermann.

FAI warned that the shooting of Adinolfi was the first of eight attacks in revenge for the arrest of eight Greek anarchists.

Donna Summer Dead: Disco Legend Dies After Cancer Battle at 63 ...

Getty Images

Donna Summer has died following a battle with cancer. The 63-year-old disco legend reportedly passed away this morning (May 17) in Florida, and her family released a statement, saying they are "at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continue legacy."

"Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time," they said.

Summer is known for her many hits, including "Hot Stuff," "Last Dance," "She Works Hard for the Money" and "Bad Girls," among many others, and won five Grammys over the course of her career. According to an update on TMZ, Summer had lung cancer, which she believed came from inhaling particles after the 9/11 attacks in New York. She was reportedly working on a new album up to the time of her death.

Born Donna Gaines and raised in Boston, Summer began singing in her church and decided to pursue a career in music in the late '60s. After performing in musicals in Europe, she released her first single, "Sally Go 'Round the Roses," under her birth name in 1971. That year, she married actor Helmuth Sommer, whose name she would keep -- and anglicize the spelling of -- after they divorced in 1975.

Donna Summer's Life in Photos

That same year, Summer had her first big success was with the song "Love to Love You Baby," which caused some controversy due to her orgasmic moaning. The track was also released as a 17-minute single in order to get more play in disco clubs and hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. That song was the first in a series of singles to top or make it to the top 10 on the Billboard Dance charts.
In 1978, Summer hit No. 3 on the singles chart with "Last Dance," a song taken from the disco-themed movie "Thank God It's Friday," in which she acted. She then had her first No. 1 single with "MacArthur Park," and topped the chart three times in 1979 with "Hot Stuff," "Bad Girls" and "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)," a duet with Barbra Streisand. "Last Dance" and "Hot Stuff" also won Grammys.

Around this time, she also battled anxiety and depression, which led to a prescription-drug addiction and several suicide attempts. She kicked the habit, became a born-again Christian and married singer and producer Bruce Sudano in 1980.

Summer strayed from her disco sound in the '80s, opting for a more rock, New Wave and R&B-oriented sound. Her greatest success of that era was 1983's She Works Hard for the Money, the title track of which went to No. 3.

She is survived by Sudano, their two daughters, Brooklyn and Amanda, and her daughter with Sommer, Mimi.

Report: LTE Connections To Hit 90 Million By Year?s End, 1 Billion By 2017

Screen shot 2012-05-17 at 12.22.30 PMBy now, we're pretty familiar with the term 4G LTE. But that in and of itself is somewhat surprising. It took 12 years for GSM wireless technology to reach one billion connections, and WCDMA took 11 years. But LTE will hit the same mark in just seven years of existence, according to a new report by Strategy Analytics. If you?re not familiar with the term, a brief explanation would be that LTE (or Long Term Evolution) is a fourth-generation wireless standard that provides users with faster data speeds, all the while making more efficient use of a carrier's wireless spectrum.

Podcast Episode #2 - Mesothelioma Law Firm

?

Shrader Podcast 2

Interviewer: Hi. I?m here with Robert Shuttlesworth of Shrader and Associates, and I?m going to be asking him some questions about mesothelioma. What is mesothelioma?

Robert Shuttlesworth: Mesothelioma is a very rare cancer that affects the linings of either the stomach, the lungs, or the heart. Every organ has a little thin membrane around it, which protects it from the other organs, and mesothelioma is a cancer that develops in that lining.

Interviewer: Is mesothelioma preventable?

Robert: Mesothelioma is preventable in the sense that asbestos companies never should have used asbestos, thereby exposing millions of people to the deadly fiber. But it?s not preventable in the sense that it takes so long to develop. Mesothelioma has got about a 40-year latency period. So if you were to set out today to say, ?I don?t want to be exposed to asbestos,? that would protect you 40 years from now. But it didn?t protect you when you were a much younger working person and being exposed in that scenario. So it was preventable from the companies? end by not putting it into our environment, but it?s not so much preventable on the workers? end if you?ve already been exposed to asbestos. Going forward, you don?t want to be exposed to asbestos, but there?s nothing you can do about past exposures at this point.

Interviewer: Does everyone exposed to asbestos develop mesothelioma?

Robert: Absolutely not. It?s a very rare cancer. It happens, oh, roughly 2,000 times a year in our country. There?s no rhyme nor reason as to who gets it, but people who were exposed to more asbestos have a higher risk of developing the disease than people who were exposed to less amounts of asbestos. But for the most part you can be exposed to asbestos, and it?s extremely rare to develop the cancer.

Interviewer: Is asbestos still used today?

Robert: Asbestos is still used if you look at the world market. It?s still used in developing countries. It?s still being mined in certain places, Canada, for example. It?s not used so much in the day-to-day products that we were using 30, 40 years ago in this country. It is still used in specialty applications. Obviously, it has a scientific value. Obviously, it?s used in the aerospace industry when you?re dealing with things that have to be super-heated, and it?s still a great insulation in that regard. But on a day-to-day basis it?s not being used anymore.

Interviewer: How do I know if there?s asbestos in my home or workplace?

Robert: The best way to determine that is through research. Obviously, things that were built in the fifties, sixties, and even into the seventies and eighties may contain certain amounts of asbestos in either the dry wall, the ceiling tiles, the floor tiles, different types of cements, siding, things of that nature, roofing shingles. All of those can have a certain amount of asbestos in it. Those products new on the market today do not. But if they were installed 30, 40 years ago, there?s a good bet there could be asbestos in it. The best way to handle that is just to presume that everything that you have in an old house may contain asbestos, and try not to create dust from those products. You don?t want to go drilling down a wall or tearing something up unless you?ve tested it to see if there?s asbestos in it.

Interviewer: What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?

Robert: Well, mesothelioma has a wide degree of symptoms. As we run through them, you?ll see that these symptoms are not unlike anything else that resembles pneumonia or the flu. Some of the first symptoms of mesothelioma can be a pain, a dull pain in the back or the chest, difficulty breathing. Sometimes the body, when the cancer just starts to develop, will start to fill in with fluids. It puts pressure against the lungs, and that makes it very difficult to breathe. Certainly, anything else associated with types of lung cancers would be symptoms?shortness of breath with either exertion or at rest, cold-like symptoms, deep, deep cough. Anything along those lines can be a symptom of mesothelioma, which makes it very difficult to detect because you may think you have a cold, but in fact you may have a deadly cancer in your body at the same time.

Interviewer: So if I have shortness of breath or trouble breathing, should I be concerned that I have mesothelioma?

Robert: No, it doesn?t. What it may mean is that you have something that?s keeping you from breathing correctly. Mesothelioma, one of symptoms is shortness of breath, but so is a cold. So is pneumonia. So is lung cancer. So are a number of things that can cause shortness of breath. When you have shortness of breath, that?s something you want to talk about with your personal physician just as you would with anything else. Maybe you have a chest cold. When you go into your physician and explain your symptoms, they?re going to know what to look for. You want to make sure that your doctors always know that you were exposed to asbestos so they can at least put mesothelioma on the range of things they need to be looking at you for.

Interviewer: Can I have mesothelioma but show no symptoms?

Robert: Yes. Mesothelioma is what we call an occupational disease, meaning that it takes 20 to 40 years sometimes to develop. The exact molecular process on how a regular cell turns into a cancer cell is not completely known, but the asbestos fiber hits the cell. It changes the DNA, and that cell becomes active some 20 to 40 years later. It?s very difficult to detect mesothelioma until it?s expanded and grown into essentially, what you?ve maybe heard of, Stage Four cancer. So until it gets to such a far degree along the path, you had mesothelioma all along but it didn?t trigger it and grow ?til the very end. So yes, it?s possible to have mesothelioma but not feel any other symptoms from it.

Interviewer: How is mesothelioma diagnosed?

Robert: The first step in becoming diagnosed with mesothelioma is to talk to your personal physician. They are the ones who are going to know your health and your body the best. Generally speaking, if there?s a pain in your chest, they?re going to want to do a chest x?ray, a CT scan, something along those lines and identify if they see anything, an abnormality, inside the chest. To the extent they see an area that they?re concerned about, a pathologist will come in and do what they call a biopsy. They?ll go in usually through the rib cage and take a little bit of tissue out. Then the pathologist will then look at those cells underneath the microscope. The pathologist is trained to look at the cells and determine what they are. That?s how a full diagnosis of mesothelioma is obtained, through a pathologist.

Interviewer: Can mesothelioma be misdiagnosed?

Robert: Yes. The most common forms of misdiagnosis of mesothelioma would involve on the personal physician level where you presented the flu-like or cold-like symptoms, and they misdiagnose you as having a cold, a touch of pneumonia, or a bacterial infection, something along these lines. When those treatments don?t resolve the problem, then additional testing may be necessary. There are times when the pathologist doesn?t get the tumor when they go in and do a biopsy, and therefore they misdiagnose it as something else. But generally speaking, they may misdiagnose mesothelioma but diagnose you with a different form of cancer. In either event they?ve got you with a diagnosis of cancer. They may not know specifically which kind yet.

But mesothelioma is very rare. Sometimes doctors are not familiar with it. There are only a handful of clinics in the country that specialize in the diagnosis of it. So often, if you?re in a small health care market, they?ll send your tissues off to a Mayo Clinic, a Sloan Kettering, or an MD Anderson type of facility to have the world?s experts take a look at it.

So sometimes it can go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed until the authority figures finally look at it and determine what it is.

Interviewer: Is mesothelioma the same thing as lung cancer?

Robert: No, actually it?s not. Mesothelioma develops outside the lung on that lining around the lung whereas lung cancer generally develops inside the lung. There are different cell lines. They create different forms of cancer. You?ll hear people discuss mesothelioma as lung cancer just mainly because of the close proximity to the lung. But it?s those two different forms of cancer, and there are two different forms of treatments available for them.

Interviewer: What is asbestosis, and can it progress into mesothelioma?

Robert: Asbestosis is a nonmalignant form of asbestos-related diseases. It?s essentially in the most basic sense a difficulty breathing. Asbestos gets into the lung. It doesn?t come back out. It stays in there. It damages lung tissue, and it makes it difficult to breathe. So you?re reducing the volume of your lung by having it essentially backed up with asbestos. Asbestosis itself, the disease of asbestosis, does not progress into mesothelioma. Those are two distinct forms of disease. But the fact that you have asbestosis proves that you were exposed to asbestos, and the asbestos fibers can cause mesothelioma.

Interviewer: Do I need to see a specialized doctor for mesothelioma treatment?

Robert: Generally speaking, when you?re diagnosed with mesothelioma, that?s going to be a pathologist who?s then going to send you to an oncologist. Oncologists are cancer doctors, and those are the ones that would treat mesothelioma. Amongst the oncologists of the world there are some that specialize specifically in mesothelioma. In general you will find those particular types of doctors and physicians at the major hospitals in major metropolitan areas. New York, Philadelphia, Houston, Los Angeles, things of that nature will be where the very specialized mesothelioma doctors reside.

But if you?re concerned about getting a doctor that is specific to mesothelioma, you need to talk to your oncologist and other treating physicians to see if they can give you a name or recommendation for one of those hospitals.

Interviewer: How do I find a mesothelioma doctor?

Robert: The best place to find a mesothelioma doctor is with your current physician. If you?ve been diagnosed with mesothelioma, there?s no doubt that you have a primary care physician. You probably have a pulmonologist. You probably have a pathologist. You probably have an oncologist already on your team. You?re going to want to talk to these physicians to see what their recommendations are on finding a specific mesothelioma doctor. There are a number of treatment places in the country that specialize in mesothelioma treatments. These are traditionally the number one, number two, number three cancer hospitals in the country. Certainly, you can contact those hospitals directly, but first you should start discussing these types of things with your personal physicians.

Interviewer: What is metastasis?

Robert: Metastasis or metastatic disease is the spread of disease from one organ to another. Generally speaking, and especially when you?re dealing with cancer, a cancer will start off someplace, and then they?ll say it spreads or metastasizes to another organ. For example, if you had colon cancer and they find it early, well, then it?s contained all within the colon. They cut it out, and hopefully everything?s fine. Other times they?ll find the cancer because it spread to the liver, the lungs, the brain, or some other organ. When it spreads, it?s much more serious because now it?s affecting more than just the one organ.

Interviewer: If our listeners are seeking additional information, is there a website or a phone number that you can direct them to?

Robert: Oh, certainly. Our website?s very good. It?s yourmesotheliomalawfirm.com, and our phone number is 1-877-637-6347.

Interviewer: Great. Thank you.
