Pancreatic beta cells produce insulin, responsible for controlling ...

Pancreatic beta cells produce insulin, responsible for controlling blood sugar levels and thus essential for our survival. Among the numerous factors that affect the workings of these cells, a protein called Cx36 was identified a few months ago by a research team at the UNIGE. The scientists there had demonstrated that in transgenic mice, suitably modified so as not to produce any Cx36, synchronization of the beta cells ceased and insulin production went out of control. This de-synchronization of insulin secretion is the first measurable sign in people suspected of developing type 2 diabetes...

Today in History

Today is Tuesday, July 31, the 213th day of 2012. There are 153 days left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

On July 31, 1942, Oxfam International had its beginnings as the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief was founded in England.

On this date:

In 1777, the Marquis de Lafayette, a 19-year-old French nobleman, was made a major-general in the American Continental Army.

In 1875, the 17th president of the United States, Andrew Johnson, died in Carter County, Tenn., at age 66.

In 1912, Nobel Prize-winning American economist Milton Friedman was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.

In 1919, Germany's Weimar (VY'-mahr) Constitution was adopted by the republic's National Assembly.

In 1930, the radio character "The Shadow" made his debut as narrator of the "Detective Story Hour" on CBS Radio.

(AP Photo/Matt Sayles, file)

(AP) ? A judge has granted Sheryl Crow a temporary restraining order against a man who is accused of threatening to shoot the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter.

The order requires Phillip Gordon Sparks, 45, to stay 100 yards away and not attempt to contact Crow, her family or any of her workers. She wrote in a sworn statement that she is fearful of Sparks because he has claimed in profane online tirades that she has stolen money from him and broken into his house.

She also states Sparks recently went to the offices of an entertainment union and told a worker that he was going to "just shoot" her.

A worker at the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists wrote in declaration accompanying Crow's filing that she spoke with Sparks on July 16 and he made the threat against Crow. He also threatened to shoot film executive Harvey Weinstein because he believed they were filming him and stole millions from him, the worker stated.

The temporary order was granted July 24 and first reported Monday by celebrity website TMZ. A hearing on a three-year protective order is scheduled for Aug. 14 in Santa Monica, Calif.

Attempts to contact Sparks were unsuccessful.

Crow, 50, has won nine Grammy Awards and has two sons, ages 5 and 2.

Researchers analyze melting glaciers and water resources in Central Asia

ScienceDaily (July 29, 2012) ? Scientists have analyzed climate changes and glaciation in the Tien Shan Mountains (Central Asia), and explained their consequences.

After the fall of the Soviet Union twenty years ago, water distribution in Central Asia became a source of conflict. In areas where summer precipitation is low, glaciers play an important role when considering the quantity of available water. The Tien Shan region is a prime example; mountain glaciers in this region contribute significantly to the fresh water supply in the arid zones of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Northwestern China. Like Switzerland, Kyrgyzstan serves as a water tower for its neighboring countries.

While the impact of climate change on glaciation and water flow in the Tien Shan Mountains has already been the subject of studies, a consistent and local perspective of collected data has never before been presented. The results of this research, led by the l'UNIGE, show that the retreat of glaciers is more pronounced in peripheral areas, where summers are dry and melting ice and snow are key sources of water.

Glaciers are losing their surface every year

The glaciers in the Tien Shan Mountains cover a surface of over 15,000 square kilometers, equivalent to one third of the surface area of Switzerland. In recent decades, these glaciers have lost between 0.1% and 0.8% of their surface per year; a decrease comparable to that of alpine glaciers. The largest retreat was observed on the periphery of the Tien Shan Mountains, near the major cities of Almaty, Bishkek, Tashkent and ?r?mqi. "In the summer, glaciers are the only source of fresh water for irrigation and household consumption in these regions," said Annina Sorg, first author of the study and researcher at the ISE (UNIGE) and at the Institute of Geology of Bern University. "The intensification of glacial melting strongly affects the quantity and seasonal distribution of water. Initially, the retreat of glaciers is going to increase the available water resources, but if precipitation doesn't compensate for the losses related to glacial retreat, the reduction of glacier volume will eventually reduce the amount of available water."

The researchers proceeded to analyze a series of measurements based on many parameters related to climate, glaciers, and streamflow in order to compare this data with existing information. Although these studies have revealed a clear tendency toward a reduction in streamflow during the summer, the impact of melting glaciers on the annual flow remains unclear. "Many factors can have an influence on water quantity," explains Annina Sorg. "Precipitation level, evaporation, and even human interference on the hydrological cycle are all factors to consider."

Long-term projections

The scenarios envisioned by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predict a 4% to 8% increase in winter precipitation in Central Asia by 2050. Summer precipitation, however, will decrease by 4% to 7%, which will exacerbate the drought during the summer. Especially since, according to estimates, temperatures could rise by almost 4?C in the next forty years.

According to projections, the Tien Shan Mountain glaciers will continue to lose their surface and volume in the coming decades.

In summary, certain Central Asian streams would move from a glacio-nival hydrological regime to a pluvio-nival regime, which would increas uncertainty regarding interannual variations in water levels, since they would be largely dependent on precipitation. Economic and political tensions in this area of the world would be added to the potentially disastrous environmental consequences.

India test fires BrahMos supersonic missile off Odisha coast

Calcutta News.Net Sunday 29th July, 2012

India on Sunday test fired BrahMos supersonic cruise missile as part of a user trial by the Army from a test range at Chandipur off Odisha coast.

The missile, which has a flight range of up to 290 km, is capable of carrying a conventional warhead of 300 kg.

"The cruise missile was test fired from a ground mobile launcher from the launch complex-3 at about 1030 hours and all data is being retrieved for analysis," defence sources said.

The cruise missile, a surface-to-surface Army version, was test fired as part of user trial by the Army, they said.

The two-stage missile, the first one being solid and the second one ramjet liquid propellant, has already been inducted into the Army and Navy, and the Air-Force version is in final stage of trial, a defence official said.

While induction of the first version of Brahmos missile system in the Indian Navy commenced from 2005 with INS Rajput, it is now fully operational with two regiments of the Army.

The air launch version and the submarine launch version of the missile system are in progress, he said.

The Army has so far placed orders for the Brahmos missile to be deployed by three regiments of the Army and two of them have already been inducted operationally.

The Defence Ministry has also given a go-ahead to Army to induct a third regiment equipped with the missile system to be deployed in Arunachal Pradesh along the China border.

Brahmos Aerospace, an Indo-Russian joint venture company headed by a distinguished Indian defence scientist, is also working to develop the air as well as the submarine launch version of the missile system and work on the project is in progress.

The last trial was conducted on March 28, 2012. (ANI)

GERMANY TO GREECE: There Will Be No ... - Business Insider

BERLIN (AP) ? Germany's finance minister said in an interview published Sunday that he can't see room for further concessions to Greece, insisting anew that the country must implement far-reaching reforms and cut its budget deficit.

International debt inspectors are scrutinizing Greece's finances and its progress in implementing unpopular budget cuts and reforms demanded in exchange for the rescue loan program that is keeping the country afloat.

Greek officials have called for more time to implement the measures, but patience among creditors is running extremely short. If the inspectors' report, expected in September, is damning, Athens could stop receiving rescue loans and face a disorderly bankruptcy and exit from the 17-nation euro.

"The aid program is already very accommodating. I cannot see that there is still scope for further concessions," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was quoted as telling the Welt am Sonntag newspaper.

As part of its austerity efforts, Greece has achieved a remarkable reduction of its budget deficit from 15.8 percent in 2009 to 9.1 percent last year. However, the country is considerably off-target in other areas of reform.

Athens largely blames this on a deeper-than-anticipated recession. However, a political crisis sparked by fierce rivalry between Greece's main political parties stalled the reforms for three months, and a three-party coalition finally emerged in June after two inconclusive elections.

Schaeuble said that "the problem did not arise because of flaws in the (rescue) program but because it was insufficiently implemented by Greece."

The country, he added, "cannot get around improving its competitiveness substantially through far-reaching reforms. In addition, Greece must achieve a sustainable level of debt by reducing its deficit."

"It doesn't help to speculate now about more money or more time," Schaeuble was quoted as saying.

Germany's vice chancellor, Economy Minister Philipp Roesler, openly questioned last week whether Greece would satisfy the conditions to receive further aid and said the prospect of a Greek exit from the euro has "lost its horror." He defended those comments, which prompted sharp criticism from Germany's opposition, in an interview broadcast Sunday.

"I remain skeptical as to whether Greece will actually have implemented the agreed reform conditions" when the debt inspectors report, Roesler told Deutschlandfunk radio.

"There can be no discounts on reforms," he said. "And that means: no further payments if the reforms are not fulfilled."

Developing the Inflatable Wetsuit

Surfers and people in the surf equipment industry are always on the lookout for new innovations that have the potential to enhance the experience of surfing. Many of these innovations seek to make the sport more exhilarating, while others there simply attempt to make it safer.

Surfing can be dangerous at times, particularly the open-ocean kind favoured by the most extreme thrill-seekers, and so safety is a definite concern for many surfers and industry experts.

Consequently, when Hawaiian surfer Shane Dorian set a world record this year by paddling into a 57 foot high wave off Maui island, his world record was not the only thing that attracted attention. The thing that really caught the eye of many observers was that he was also trialing a brand new prototype wetsuit - one with a very unique set of features.

Being pushed under by a giant wave has long been one of the worst perils faced by big wave surfers like Dorian, and the new wetsuit he was testing claimed to have the answer to this problem. It was called the V1 and was claimed by manufacturers Billabong to be the world's first inflatable wetsuit.

The science behind an inflatable wetsuit could not be simpler. When a surfer finds themselves deep underwater, they simply pull the shoulder-mounted ripcord, which inflates the back-mounted air bladder with a small carbon dioxide cartridge. The surfer doesn't even need to swim, as they can just let the wetsuit take them back to the surface.

Dorian's idea for the wetsuit came about last year after he experienced one of the worst wipeouts of his life, and only narrowly escaped drowning. He wanted a wetsuit which would improve safety for the big wave surfers, and took his suggestion to the manufacturers.

In the course of the research and development phase, a team of military equipment designers were consulted for their knowledge and experience of creating an underwater air bladder. This is quite a common occurrence when designing new products, because the military tend to lead the way in innovation and extreme sports equipment makers tend to follow in their footsteps.

Once the designs were finalized, a prototype of the first inflatable wetsuit was created and then given to Shane Dorian to test, first in calm waters, then in the much more dangerous Cortes Bank area 100 miles off the coast of California.

Through all the tests, the inflatable wetsuit passed with flying colours. When Dorian was pulled under the water following a bad wipeout, he simply pulled the cord and let the wetsuit inflate, carrying him swiftly to the ocean surface.

With a prototype model already successfully tested, all that remains for the manufacturers now is to secure the patent for their design and then bring it to the commercial market. Some experts have already expressed concern however, suggesting that once inflatable wetsuits become widely available, they will encourage surfers to take more risks and be more reckless, relying on the wetsuit to get them out of trouble every time.

Cavendish hails 'dream team' as hosts look for first gold

Tour de France sprint king Mark Cavendish believes a 'dream' British cycling team can notch what could be the hosts' first gold medal of the Games at the Olympic men's road race on Saturday.

Only six days after Cavendish played a role in Bradley Wiggins' historic yellow jersey triumph, the race's 23-times stage winner starts as the favourite for the 250 km men's road race on the opening day of competition.

A host of challengers like Germany's Andre Greipel and Slovakian Peter Sagan stand in his way, but Cavendish believes Britain's five-man team have the edge.

"It's the dream team," said the 27-year-old from the Isle of Man. "If we wanted to win this bike race we couldn't be in a better situation team-wise."

Britain will line up with a five-man team notably including Wiggins and Scot David Millar armed with a plan to deliver Cavendish to the home straight in the perfect position for a bunch sprint.

If the plan comes together, the 'Manx Missile' -- going on his recent form -- will be hard to beat.

Crowned the world champion in 2011, when he beat Australian Matt Goss to the rainbow jersey in Copenhagen, Cavendish put some doubts over his form early in the Tour de France to bed with two, stunning late wins in the race.

Wiggins affirmed that any concerns Cavendish may ultimately pay for completing both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour in the last two months are well wide of the mark.

"We've got the fastest man in the world and I guess it's for other people to combat that," said Wiggins.

When it comes to tactics, the road race, however, will be hard to predict.

It starts and finishes on the flat of The Mall within sight of Buckingham Palace, but with a circuit which featuring the climb of Box Hill and will be raced nine times Britain will have to be tactically astute.

Australia said they won't just be looking to put Goss in a bunch sprint.

"Most of the traditional cycling nations don't want a sprint because they've got very limited chances of a medal, I expect the race to be aggressive early; otherwise it just plays into the hands of the Poms (British)," said Australia boss Matt White.

"We've got a team that can afford to be aggressive. If it doesn't work out then we've always got Gossy for the sprint, we can work both ways."

Like Britain with Wiggins, Australia's team of Goss, Simon Gerrans, Stuart O'Grady, Cadel Evans and Michael Rogers has been labelled the "best" ever by O'Grady, who is competing in his sixth Olympics.

"This is the best team Australia has ever had going into an Olympic road race," said O'Grady.

Milan-SanRemo champion Gerrans, meanwhile believes believes one of their potential advantages is the pressure factor on the hosts.

"Yeah, definitely, and the fact they are going in with the current world champion (Cavendish) and Tour de France champion (Wiggins) as well, that's obviously attracting a lot of attention," said Gerrans.

"In the past they have seemed to handle the pressure fairly well, but I don't think they have ever had pressure like this before."

As well as Cavendish and Goss there's Sagan, Greipel, and Belgian pair Tom Boonen and Philippe Gilbert.

Sagan, who won three stages at the Tour de France including the sprinters' green jersey, stands out because he will not to have the full five-man team at his disposal given Slovakia's comparatively lower ranking

And while he has been given a positive appraisal from world cycling chief Pat McQuaid, the Irishman said a Cavendish win would not go amiss.

"I want to see the best win, whoever it might be," said McQuaid, the International Cycling Union (UCI) president.

" ... But I have to show a certain bias. Mark Cavendish coming up that finishing straight would just be the icing on the cake for the first gold medal of the Olympics."

Presentation Title in PowerPoint | PowerPoint Presentation

Usually when we need to make a PowerPoint presentation one of the elements that we pay attention when we finally complete the content is to prepare the presentation title and apply the final touches to the slide design. The presentation title is an important element of any presentation since in advance this title will be seen by our audience even before we start the meeting or presentation. That?s why we need to pay special attention to a well designed presentation title that lets share the message about what the audience will find inside the presentation (who is the presenter, or what is the topic) but also?generate expectations so we can keep our audience stand up.

Here we will see some ideas that may help at the time we need to work on the final touches of our presentation, especially when we need to prepare a PowerPoint Presentation Title.

A simple Presentation Title can be affordable in any general presentation. Moreover, common PowerPoint templates like those that you can find in the official PowerPoint program, have a very simple layout for the titles and sections.

This example may not be the best one. In this case, the title uses gradient and the sub title is less visible than the title. But the purpose of this presentation is not to highlight the title, instead we wanted to highlight the FPPT.com logo.

In a business presentation or prior to a conference, the presentation in PowerPoint is usually loaded before the presentation starts and displayed in the big screen while the audience is sitting in the?auditorium. Some of them may use smartphones and QR Code readers so it will be desirable to let them scan your Contact information from the slide.

The most important thing is to focus on getting the message across so avoiding unneeded animations and other kind of distractions may be desired. Even lousy templates with low quality pictures will give other a sense of disconnection while you want to keep them stand up watching your presentation.

In order to make a good presentation title slide in PowerPoint, keep it clean, be consistent on fonts, colour and background. Don?t overwhelm the main slide with lot of text just keep the most important or core topic of the presentation and add any other side information like your Contact, your business position (ie: Chief Executive Officer, or better just CEO). Use contrasting colors for text and background. Dark text on a light background is best. Some backgrounds using patterns or textures may reduce readability of text.

If you use images, you can split the slide in different sections, for example use a vertical layout where you can display a high quality picture on the left and the presentation title on the right.

This example shows a good PPT slide where the presentation title is?accompanied?with a nice HD photo for a travel guide presentation. Notice that the title is in the middle of the slide instead of the bottom part. This is also important since if you put the title too low and you are presenting in a big auditorium, the people in front will hide this title for the people who is behind.

London 2012: The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games | Last ...

The London 2012 Summer Olympics will captivate the world in a matter of days, but the official video game tie-in is already here, courtesy of Sega. The lengthily named London 2012: The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games puts players in the position to experience the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat in over 30 world-class competitions. London 2012 manages to capture the games? spirit with its collection of mini-games, but the lack of real-world athletes and a few ho-hum events keep it from bringing home the gold.

Olympic Tech

On Your Mark?
London 2012 features 36 nations competing for Olympic gold in such varied competitions as the 100 meter dash, archery, skeet shooting, table tennis, and weightlifting. When you select a nation to represent, London 2012 displays relevant background information such as the country?s first year of Olympic participation, total number of medals won since, and the sports in which it excels. I selected team USA which excels at athletic, swimming, diving, and wrestling.

Unfortunately, London 2012 lacks real-world athlete names (like Usain Bolt), so players spoiled by FIFA Soccer 12 ($59.99, 4 stars) and Madden NFL 12?s ?($39.99, 4 stars) painstaking player recreations won?t feel like they are playing a true Olympic game. That said, you can edit characters? names and appearances, so if you?re diligent and have the time, you can recreate your favorite athletes.

Get Set?
Each in-game day you can choose to participate in a handful of events. You can opt to play a tutorial before each event to get the flow of the mechanics, or dive straight in?the latter isn?t recommended. London 2012 focuses on rhythm and precision, not button-mashing, so if you leap into the game with a button on rapid-fire, you won?t medal. This is exemplified in the racing events where you tap a button to fill a momentum meter. Keep it in the green and your sprinter runs at a fast, steady pace; have the meter go red by pressing the button too rapidly and she or he will burnout. Swimming works in a similar time-based fashion but you use analog sticks instead of buttons. It?s truly a refreshing change of pace.

That said, some of the simplified controls lack a certain pizzazz. The gymnastic events are quick-time events, which essentially sees you tapping buttons in time with their on-screen appearances. Some will appreciate the simplified controls, but I found them a bit too simple. London 2012 also supports the Kinect and PlayStation Move motion peripherals. I played the game using Kinect (it supports a dozen events), and found the controls hit or miss, depending on the event.

Sega includes multiple modes to keep gameplay fresh. Besides the single player, local multiplayer (up to 4 players), and online multiplayer modes (8 players) there?s Event Play where you pick and play a group of sports in four-player competition, and Party Play that lets you play one-off events. You can also save these event ?playlists? so you can load them up and continue playing at a later time.

The game has TV-style presentation, complete with instant replays and component announcers who pull you into the action. You?ll enjoy watching London 2012?s attractive character models that swim, run, and cycle in realistic fashion. That said, the characters have dead eyes and expressions that dip into the uncanny valley.

Go!
London 2012 is a solid title that manages to capture some of the competitive glory that is the Summer Olympics. It is, essentially, a collection of mini-games, so there isn?t much connection between events even in career mode. Teen gamer dies after 'Diablo 3' binge

24 min.

An 18-year-old gamer in China died after playing the best-selling "Diablo 3" game for?forty hours straight.?

That's right, the teen spent an entire work week's worth of hours gaming non-stop, collapsed and then died. So?reports the?Australian Associated Press?citing ?Taiwan's United Daily News as the source of the information.

According to the AP, the teen booked a private room at an Internet cafe in southern Taiwan and then proceeded to play for nearly two days without eating.

An attendant entered the room and found Chuang resting on a table. After the attendant woke him, he stood, took a few steps and then collapsed, the report said.?He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a local hospital.

Sadly, this is not the first time this has happened in China and other Asian countries where gaming addiction is an ongoing issue.?

Back in February, a 23-year-old gamer died after playing a marathon session of "League of Legends" in a New Taipei gaming center. In February of last year, a 30-year-old?man died at an Internet cafe outside Bejing after a three-day gaming binge. Back in 2005, a 28-year-old South Korean man died after playing "Starcraft" for 50 hours.?

In most cases, the cause of death was cardiac arrest.?

Sure, it's easy enough to think this is a problem that happens to other people in other places. But let's admit it -- we've all played a few choice games for too long. So let this be a lesson to all of us: Gaming is supposed to be an enjoyable pastime, not an uhealthy?obsession.

Most importantly, your?heart shouldn't get tired of?gaming before you do.

China's slowing economy likely to stabilise: analysts

BEIJING: China's slowing growth has triggered alarm bells, but analysts say government moves to further fine-tune monetary policy should be enough to stabilise the world's second-largest economy.

China announced Friday its gross domestic product grew 7.6 percent in the second quarter, the slowest pace in more than three years.

Even before those figures came out, the government had already taken the unusual step of cutting interest rates twice in less than a month, and reducing reserve ratio requirements three times since December.

Analysts say policymakers may use those tools again, though much depends on how the rest of the world performs.

Qu Hongbin, HSBC chief economist for Greater China, based in Hong Kong, said Beijing should use a combination of monetary and fiscal policy as well as deregulation to stem the slowdown.

"It should be sufficient to stabilise growth to a modest recovery," he said, expecting further steps this year to include up to four more reductions in bank reserve requirement ratios, which can spur lending, and another interest rate cut.

The prospect of a prolonged slowdown in China is unsettling after years of double-digit growth rates propelled the country up the global league tables to unseat Japan and become the world's second-largest economy.

Job growth in the United States, the world's largest economy, remains weak and the eurozone is still struggling with its sovereign debt crisis. Japan is doing better after last year's disasters, though is not strong enough by itself to spearhead global expansion.

China is now the world's biggest market for automobiles and the globe's top exporter, among other superlatives. It's a pillar of the global economy along with the United States, the European Union and Japan.

The ruling Communist party claims managing China's economic rise as a major achievement and source of legitimacy. But party leaders now find themselves navigating choppy waters just months ahead of once-in-a-decade handover of power.

While GDP expanding in the seven percent range would be the envy of most economies, it has triggered alarm bells in China.

On Sunday, Premier Wen Jiabao said that while government efforts to stabilise the slowing juggernaut were working, the road ahead could be bumpy.

China's "economic rebound is not yet stable and economic hardship may continue for a period of time", Wen told an economic planning meeting in southwestern Sichuan province, the state Xinhua news agency reported.

He also suggested, however, that China's potential remains high as "the basis for economic growth is good."

Wen's comments were his latest over the past few weeks expressing concern over the economy.

Yu Bin, an economist working for the State Council, or cabinet, said last week that while further monetary policy tweaks are an option, he expressed optimism their scope could be limited.

"If China's economy gets stabilised gradually in the third quarter and even rebounds, and meanwhile the world economy maintains mild recovery, I think the room for further cuts on interest rates or reserve requirement ratio will be sharply narrowed," he told reporters.

Li Wei and Stephen Green of Standard Chartered expect bank reserve requirement ratios to be lowered three more times this year and also see another interest rate cut.

They say stronger production of cement and steel products in June and higher bank lending are among factors heralding a better performance in the second half of the year.

"The economy will not come roaring back -- but it will at very least stabilise and should regain a little bit of momentum," they wrote in a report.

Chorching Goh, lead economist for the World Bank in Beijing, said that China's leaders are not just looking at the economy's performance over the short-run.

"They are quite serious about tackling some of the difficult issues over the next 5-6 years," she said, citing the need for banking and other financial reforms as well as addressing social issues such as the country's ageing population.

"They do plan to take the occasion of the leadership change to make bold changes," she said. "I think the will is there."

Batmobile film tease revs up 'Dark Knight' fans

By Kurt Schlosser

For Batman fans, the Caped Crusader's many gadgets are some of the most compelling elements of the long-running cartoon, TV and film series. The Batmobile has to be at the top of that list.

So, as "The Dark Knight Rises" is set to race away from other summer box office contenders, Warner Bros. is showing off a trailer for "The Batmobile," a documentary which will be available on Blu-ray and digital download this holiday season, and which was previewed at Comic-Con last weekend.

"For me, as for a lot of people my age, you can't really remember a time before the Batmobile," "Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan says in the teaser. "You've always been aware of it and always found it to be something pretty exciting."

The film features interviews with many who have been connected to the superhero over the years, including directors Joel Schumacher ("Batman Forever" and Batman & Robin") and?Tim Burton ("Batman Returns.)

Actor Christian Bale is asked what it was like to drive the car. "Very noisy," Bale said. "It's like having Ozzy Osbourne screaming in your ear."

The current "Dark Knight" star is only outdone by TV's "Batman," Adam West, who says, "I did things with the Batmobile maybe that shouldn't have been done."

Study suggests moderate drinking lowers risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis in women

Study suggests moderate drinking lowers risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis in women [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 17-Jul-2012

A follow-up study of more than 34,000 women in Sweden has shown that moderate drinkers, in comparison with abstainers, were at significantly lower risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an often serious and disabling type of arthritis. RA is known to relate to inflammation, and it is thought that this inflammation is blocked to some degree by the consumption of alcohol. In this study, women who consumed at least 4 drinks per week (with a drink being defined as containing 15 grams of alcohol) had 37% lower risk of developing RA than subjects reporting never drinking or consuming less than 1 drink/week.

This large study is important as few prospective studies are of adequate size to have sufficient cases of RA to evaluate factors related to its development. The study supports previous research showing a lower risk of developing RA, or milder severity of the disease, among moderate drinkers than among abstainers.
