Students with autism and emotional disorders exiled for disorderly ...

STUDENTS as young as five are receiving multiple suspensions as schools struggle to contain extreme violence by children with autism and mental and emotional disorders.

Some students prone to dangerous outbursts are attending school for one or two hours a day, while others are regularly sent home after attacks on teachers or other children.

Schools now face a tsunami of kids with autism spectrum and mental disorders but parents claim suspension is not working and have called for teachers to be better trained to handle students with disabilities in the classroom.

At one Sutherland school, students are reported to have had concerns for the mental stability of a classmate who allegedly held scissors to another student's throat and had prepared a "die list".

Serious incident reports collated by the Department of Education and Communities also show a Year 9 youth stood over his principal and threatened to "put a bullet in his head", while a Year 6 boy, who sliced a Year 5 student across the forearm with scissors causing him to bleed, had a history of "sudden violent outbursts".

And one of the youngest students logged in incident reports, a Year 1 boy, tried to stab children with a pocket knife on a school bus. The driver disarmed him.

The reports show highly disturbed students have threatened to burn down their school, kill staff and committed serious assaults with weapons. At an inner Sydney school, a Year 9 female grabbed the assistant principal by the hair and punched her several times in the face before kicking her on the ground. The student was arrested and suspended "with a view to expulsion".

Autism spectrum disorder is a lifelong disability that affects the way a person communicates and relates to people and the world around them.

Autism Advisory Support Service founder Grace Fava said Australia had not acknowledged the size of the problem or provided enough support in schools.

"We need to realise that teaching will never be the same again," she said. "Every teacher will have a melting pot of kids with different needs.

"We need to ensure every child is a priority ... we want teachers trained to handle it."

The number of children with severe autism in public schools soared by 318 per cent in five years and is expected to blow out even further by 2020. Mental health cases other than autism leapt by 248 per cent.

Experts say it is a world-wide phenomenon and boys are affected more than girls by a ratio of four to one.

A spokesman said the education department provided a "wide range of professional learning for teachers and support staff" to meet the needs of students with disabilities.

"Since 2009 this includes training in meeting the needs of students with autism spectrum disorder and more than 4000 staff have completed this training," the spokesman said.

"The department also provides training for teachers in a range of other areas that are relevant to supporting students with autism spectrum disorders including communication and behaviour problems."

Motherhood: My Newest Yoga Teacher Learn About Yoga About Yoga

Bookmark and Share

By Charlotte Singmin ? November 3rd, 2012 ? 465 Views

Since I began my love affair with yoga over a decade ago, I?ve been fortunate to study with many wonderful teachers in different countries, cities, and studios.? Each person and experience has played a role in shaping both the teacher, and the student that I am now.? But these days, my newest and most influential teacher is motherhood.?

Now more than ever, I am finding resonance in the yamas (yogic ethics), in particular ahimsa?(non-violence).? Ahimsa is easy to understand in concepts such as vegetarianism; choosing to eat a plant-based diet is kind to animals and the planet?s resources.? But becoming a mother has opened my eyes to a more subtle meaning of ahimsa; that of non-judgment.?

As a yoga teacher, I instruct my students to let go of judgment as they move more deeply into their poses, and into their practice.?? So often we focus on the outcome rather than the journey, on getting the forehead to the floor or our heels to the mat in an attempt to ?conquer? the pose.? Most of us have been guilty at one time or another of comparing ourselves to the yogi on the mat next to us, of trying to out-pigeon, or out-down-dog our neighbour.? Sometimes the hardest part of yoga is letting go of this competitive nature, so that we may practice with lovingkindness.

For many of us (but especially moms), the tendency towards self-judgment is strong, even off the mat.? It might begin in pregnancy as we eye other mothers on the street, sizing up their bellies, their baby weight, how tired or equally how energetic they look.? We make judgments and comparisons based on our assumptions, instead of allowing ourselves to be free of arbitrary expectations.

After baby comes, the whispers of judgment can become even stronger.? We might feel pressure to attain and maintain a certain standard of ?perfection?, both in the home and at work; to raise a perfect baby, to be a ?yummy? mummy, to keep a spotless house, to manage a successful career.? We are judging ourselves harshly and unnecessarily, when we regard anything less than this idea of perfection as failure.?

As a new mom I was consumed with the needs of my tiny baby; suddenly my time was no longer my own.? My beauty routine was pared down to a bare minimum--a shower and a swipe of lip-gloss if I...

Catholic bishops take campaign to prayer and pulpit | Strange ...

The Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle website is topped by three videos of Archbishop J. Peter Sartain arguing against same-sex marriage,? but a newly posted ?Prayer in Defense of Marriage? seems to carry a similar anti-Referendum 74 message.? A passage:

?May your Holy Spirit enlighten our society to treasure the heroic love of husband and wife, and guide our leaders to sustain and protect the singular place of mothers and fathers in the lives of their children.?

Archbishop J. Peter Sartain

But that?s nothing compared to campaigning from the pulpit elsewhere in America.? The most strident words, not surprisingly, come from Peroria, Ill., Bishop Daniel Jenky, who earlier likened Obama administration policies on contraception and health coverage to those of Stalin and Hitler.

Jenky ordered diocesan priests to read his latest broadside from their pulpits, telling them:? ?By virtue of your vow of obedience to me as your bishop, I require that this letter be personally read by each celebrating priest at each weekend Mass.?

The letter attacks Catholic public figures to support abortion rights and likens them to the crowd that demanded Jesus? crucifixion.? Writes Jenky:? ?Today, Catholic politicians, bureaucrats and their electoral supporters who callously enable the destruction of innocent human life in the womb also thereby reject Jesus as their Lord.? They are objectively guilty of grave sin.?

The partisan message continues, and threats about the next life continue, s Jenky writes:

?Since the foundation of the American Republic and the adoption of the Bill of Rights, I do not think there has ever been a time more threatening to our religious liberty than the present . .? . For those who hope for salvation, no political loyalty can ever take precedence over loyalty to the Lord Jesus Christ and to his Gospel of Life.?

The message on Referendum 74 in Washington is presented in a milder fashion.? After a fiery pastoral letter last month from Bishop Joseph Tyson, the Diocese of Yakima website currently carries the headline:? ?Why a good person can vote against same-sex marriage.?

The message, especially on abortion, is far more strident in the Rust Belt.? Green Bay, Wisconsin, Bishop David Ricken wrote in an October 24 letter that the Democratic Party platform support for marriage equality and abortion rights and other ?intrinsic evils? puts parishoners? souls at risk if they support the Democrats.

The Catholic bishops of Pennsylvania wrote a letter to voters last week arguing that abortion, contraception and marriage equality policies supported by the Obama administration and Democrats mean America is ?losing its soul by little steps.?

The National Catholic Reporter sought response from James Salt, executive director of Catholics United, a progressive group, who charged that Jenky was ?using the pulpits of his diocese for partisan procalmations? and warned that this will drive young people away from the church.

?By brazenly violating IRS and church guidelines against partisan activity, Bishop Jenky has shown that he is more interested in following the paths of Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson than the Gospel of Jesus Christ,? said Salt.? ?As more and more younger Catholics abandon the faith on account of the bishops? far-right policies, Bishop Jenky should ponder how his antics will affect the relevance of the Catholic bishops for generations to come.?

Blind Chinese activist's brother says lawsuit rejected

BEIJING (Reuters) - The eldest brother of blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng said on Friday a Chinese court had rejected his lawsuit filed against local police and officials for unlawfully barging into his house after his brother's escape.

The rejection of Chen Guangfu's lawsuit on Thursday was an expected outcome, but it underscores the continued pressure on Chen Guangcheng's family in northeastern Shandong province, about five months after Chen Guangcheng left for the United States to study.

Chen Guangfu said he would appeal, and although his legal fight is likely to fail, it could renew international focus on China's human rights and legal system and galvanise lawyers and rights advocates to push for the rule of law in China.

Chinese courts rarely accept lawsuits filed by dissidents or their relatives, and when courts do they invariably find for the government.

The Yinan County People's Court rejected Chen Guangfu's lawsuit on the grounds that he did not provide "any corresponding evidence" and therefore he "cannot prove that his claims are based in reality", Chen Guangfu said by telephone from his village of Dongshigu.

Court officials could not be reached for comment.

Chen Guangfu is trying to sue police and local government officials that oversee his village for "scaling the walls of his home and for wrecking his home" just after midnight on April 27, the day after they discovered his blind brother had escaped.

"This outcome was expected; it's just one of their rogue tactics," Chen Guangfu, 55, told Reuters. "How can they say the evidence doesn't correspond with reality? Kegui is still in their hands."

Chen Guangfu's son, Chen Kegui, has been charged with intentional wounding after he took a kitchen knife and slashed three officials who had barged into Chen Guangfu's home and beat up family members of Chen Guangcheng. Chen Kegui's lawyers have been repeatedly denied access to him.

After breaking free from 19 months of house imprisonment in April, Chen Guangcheng sought refuge in the U.S. embassy in Beijing, embarrassing the Chinese authorities and sparking a diplomatic crisis between Beijing and Washington. He is now studying law in New York.

How best to rollover 401k to IRA?

As I plan for retirement I am interested in input on how best to reinvest the money (approx $450k) that I will rollover from my company 401k to my Schwab account.

What are your thoughts on the period of time one should take to dollar cost average the money back into the market. I plan to use an all ETF portfolio 70/30 - stocks/bonds.

Thanks.

For simplicity sake when I did mine, I think I had to consolidate the shares so that it could be done in one transfer. ( moved everything to money market) and then rolled it into a money market at Vanguard ( direct transfer) from there I bought what I wanted when I wanted. When you are doing a rollover the earned income rule does not come into play, that would involve new money.

Mine too but I would strongly advise trustee to trustee. When not a trustee to trustee transfer, I have seen withholding taken out for tax purposes and then the same amount not being put into the IRA. This creates a painful tax event. As fas as DCAing into an IRA, you must have earned income, just in case you might not be aware.

Maybe I wasn't clear and a better way to put it, once a traditional IRA is setup, any monies going into it, must be from qualified compensation. The rules for rollovers and other scenarios should be researched in depth before pulling the trigger. Personally I am not upon all of the rules as there are many and many money managers and tax pros aren't too conversant either,

From IRS Pub 590

Table 1-1. Compensation for Purposes of an IRA

Includes ... Does not include ... earnings and profits from
property. wages, salaries, etc.interest and
dividend income. commissions.pension or annuity
income. self-employment income.deferred compensation.alimony and separate maintenance.income from certain
partnerships. nontaxable combat pay.any amounts you exclude
from income.

What Is Not Compensation?

Compensation does not include any of the following items.

  • Earnings and profits from property, such as rental income, interest income, and dividend income.
  • Pension or annuity income.
  • Deferred compensation received (compensation payments postponed from a past year).
  • Income from a partnership for which you do not provide services that are a material income-producing factor.
  • Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) payments reported on Schedule SE (Form 1040), line 1b.
  • Any amounts (other than combat pay) you exclude from income, such as foreign earned income and housing costs.

But not in the case of a 401(k) to rollover IRA, I think. It was earned income that went into the 401 to begin with. I favor rothlev's approach: do the transfer and then worry about how and when to deploy.

Apart from that, it wasn't said how the 401(k) funds are currently invested; in my case, a 403(b)-to-IRA rollover was simple as I just left the same allocation. It was kind of like moving socks from one drawer to another.

Regarding the original question: it seems to me to be a little trickier to dollar cost average into ETFs than into mutual funds but I think a 12-24 month period would be reasonable. But that is not necessarily what I would do, since I did the dollar cost averaging with the original contributions (however, I am not an expert).

When you say 401k to Schwab account, I assume that you mean 401k to Schwab IRA account so you will not pay taxes on the $450k. I did a similar 401k rollover in early 2012. My 401k issued a check to Vanguard (Schwab in your case) FBO (for the benefit of) [my name] and mailed it to me. I photocopied it and sent it to Vanguard with the requisite paperwork for them to deposit it into my IRA. A direct transfer from your 401k provider to Schwab is preferable IMO but a check can work. the thing you want to make sure of is that the check is not made out to you.

I terms of investing it - if it was 70/30 in the 401k and you move it 70/30 into similar funds it shouldn't make much difference. If it was in cash you may want to value average in over a set period of time. Value averaging is a bit different than dollar cost averaging and results in investing more when prices are relatively low and less when prices are relatively high.

Yes it is a Schwab IRA, guess that would have helped a few other respondents...

My 401k doesn't have the breadth of choice as the IRA, and certainly not Schwab ETF's so my new investments will not be the same as the ones in the 401k.

Still interested in any other thoughts on timing on putting the money back to work.

Don't make it more complex than it needs to be. You've got a pile of money you want to move from point A to point B.

Figure out where you want things to be at point B. More than just "better diversified". You can probably just send the money en masse to point B, ask the 401k administrator. Move the money and put it to work as you choose, but you still want to figure out what your allocation will be.

Ideally, it will be sitting there for a long time so trying to be clever about buying may not matter.

Here's what I am looking at:

schb - 35% US Broad Market
schf - 20% International
sche - 5% Emerging Markets
schz - 15% US Aggregate Bond
schp -15% US TIPS
schh - 5% US REIT
dbc - 5% Commodities

"so trying to be clever about buying may not matter"

Point taken

Majority of US Small Businesses Say Digital Literacy - Alabama.gov

WASHINGTON and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct.?31, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --?More than half of America's small businesses (53 percent) say it is important for new hires to possess a strong proficiency in basic computer skills as it relates to the online safety and security of their business, according to a new survey of 1,015 U.S. small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) by the National Cyber Security Alliance and Symantec. (The full survey is available at: http://www.staysafeonline.org/stay-safe-online/resources/)

The survey ? which also shows 87 percent of small businesses have one or more employees who use the Internet for daily operations ? has been released in conjunction with National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

In addition to the month-long awareness initiative, NCSA is working with the National Cybersecurity Education Council (NCEC) to formally institute and promote cyber security education programs in K-12 schools, higher education, and career and technical education environments nationwide. This joint effort has included an extensive strategic planning process to identify areas where consensus can be achieved to begin developing a cyber-capable workforce and digital citizenry that is strong and savvy in cybersecurity. (http://www.staysafeonline.org/ncec/)

Integrating cyber education into the national curriculum is important to America's workforce. The survey shows SMBs take into account one's digital literacy skills when making hiring decisions. Over half of SMBs surveyed believe a good online safety posture is essential for new hires in the following ways:

  • Ethical Use of Technology: Three-fifths (59 percent) of SMBs say knowing the proper use of email, social networks, and engagement online is essential (38 percent) or important (21 percent) to the safety and security of their business.
  • Understanding Privacy Protection Measures: Fifty-six percent of SMBs say it is essential (41 percent) or important (15 percent) for new hires to understand protecting the privacy of information.
  • Internet Security Practices: Fifty-eight percent of SMBs say it is essential (38 percent) or important (20 percent) for new hires to know Internet security practices like password protection measures, identifying safe websites, avoiding phishing and other scams.
  • Knowing the Importance of Protecting Intellectual Property: Fifty-five percent of SMBs say it is essential (40 percent) or important (15 percent) for new hires to have basic skills and knowledge around how to safeguard intellectual property.

Aside from bringing on new hires who posses basic online safety skills, U.S. small businesses could be operating under the assumption that their existing employees know how to stay safe online. Seventy-percent of SMB owners/operators say they do not provide online safety training for employees.

"Small businesses are expressing a strong need for employees with basic skills and knowledge about how to use technology safely, securely, ethically and productively," said Michael Kaiser, executive director of the National Cyber Security Alliance. "Given the role of small businesses in our economy, it's so important to integrate cybersecurity training into all education levels ? from K-life. SMBs should also provide ongoing training to employees to be sure skills are reinforced and new skills are developed as the technology changes."?

"Small businesses are a driving force of our economy, and new technologies and online services are becoming an everyday part of how SMBs run their businesses," said Brian Burch, vice president of Americas Marketing for SMB, Symantec. "According to Symantec's research, SMBs have become a key target for cybercriminals and that trend is bound to continue. Small business owners and employees must do a better job not only becoming better educated on cybersecurity, but also better at implementing technologies to protect themselves and the information that fuels their businesses."?

SMBs should ensure that both current employees and new hires thoroughly understand ways to increase online safety and security. These simple tips can help aid that process:

  • Enforce strong password policies: Passwords with eight characters or more and use of a combination of letters, numbers and symbols (e.g., # $ % ! ?) will help protect? data.
  • Encrypt confidential information: Implement encryption technologies on desktops, laptops and removable media to protect confidential information from unauthorized access, providing strong security for intellectual property, customer and partner data.
  • Use a reliable security solution: Today's solutions do more than just prevent viruses and spam; they scan files regularly for unusual changes in file size, programs that match known malware, suspicious e-mail attachments and other warning signs. It's the most important step to protect information.
  • Stay up to date: A security solution is only as good as the frequency with which it is updated. New viruses, worms, Trojan horses and other malware are born daily, and variations of them can slip by software that is not current.

Twelve Stones Scrapbooking: SEM Challenge #22 Family Ties

?Hello blogger friends!

?

I'm here today with this month's Scrapping Everyday Miracles?challenge. The theme this time around is Family Ties and the scrap twist is to add some ribbon to your layouts.

?

?

I thought long and hard about this layout. Although I have an amazing immediate family, I wanted to do something a little different. As I was thinking about what photo to use, I got hungry and headed to the kitchen where I saw the perfect photo taped on the fridge. I come from a huge family and on my mom's side we make it a priority to get together as much as possible. Every September we have a reunion with at least 70 of us together for the long week-end. I have family that come as far as North Carolina and even Yukon! My kids only have 4 immediate cousins on my side but with the extended cousins, it's crazy how many kids are running around!

?

This photo is such a great reminder of how truly blessed we are. So many families rarely see each other. I cherish my time with these family members, especially those that I only see once a year.

?

For this layout I choose this funky kit from

Doodlebug. I thought it was perfect for these silly girls having so much fun. I love the little

piece of ribbon all bunched up with Doodlebug

twine.

?

Won't you join me for this month's challenge. I'd love to see what you come up with. When you do, make sure to link up with Scrapping Everyday Miracles!

Antonio Villaraigosa Dances To 'I Believe I Can Fly,' Flapping His 'Wings' And Singing (VIDEO)

The Mayor of Los Angeles believes he can fly. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's inner bird came out Tuesday as he did a priceless interpretive dance to R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly."

In the KFI video above, Villaraigosa has the time of his life flapping his "wings," dancing and lip syncing. At one point, his wings even appear to lift him out of his seat a few inches. It's really quite inspirational.

CLICK HERE OR SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATES.

And he's not the first elected official to test his swagger. From Tom DeLay on "Dancing with the Stars" to Hillary Clinton grinding in Colombia, politicians embarrassing themselves on the dance floor is a proud American tradition.

UPDATE: Since the story's been published, the video went private. You'll have to take our word for it when it comes to Villaraigosa's scintillating lip-syncing skills. Why so embarrassed, Mr. Mayor? As the slideshow below shows, you're in good company.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are more than just the leaders of the free world -- they're leaders on the dance floor. Check out their moves, along with other less-coordinated electeds:

  • Barack Obama

  • Al Gore

  • Dmitry Medvedev

  • George W. Bush

  • Madeleine Albright

  • Karl Rove

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger

  • Colin Powell

  • Prince Charles

  • Michele Bachmann

  • Cory Booker

  • Al Sharpton

  • Michelle Obama

Jeff Walker Product Launch Formula Live 2012

It was 7:30 at night after a long, all-day series of mind-blowing presentations at a big internet marketing conference. I sat in the audience, surrounded by 500 amazing entrepreneurs writing notes as quickly as I could in my notebook.

Jeff Walker, creator of a multi-million dollar business that teaches people how to launch products and businesses, and his brother Jon Walker, who manages Jeff?s joint venture partners, were on stage teaching about a topic that had us all on the edge of our seats, despite the exhaustion from a 12-hour day of focusing.

Jeff was drawing a diagram on a flipchart, explaining a powerful method for getting the attention of the big ?A? level joint venture partners in your market.

My head was down as I took notes when I heard him say through the loud speakers ?Where?s Forest??

My head snapped up to look at him as he searched the crowd for me. I raised my hand and shouted ?Over here.?

All 500 people in the room turned their eyes to me. My heart began to pound in my chest. One of my mentors and heroes had just called me out from the stage.

He said, ?Do you remember how my whole demeanor changed last night when you introduced yourself and told me what you?d done for me during my last product launch??

I said ?Of course,? and he went on to tell the story of how I had done what he was teaching on stage and how it had worked in getting his attention.

The story he told went like this:

The previous day, Jeff was telling us that the connections you make with other people at live conferences are extremely valuable. These kind of connections have been worth millions of dollars for him in his own business.

He said that out of the top 20 joint venture partners on his leaderboard for his last launch, he had had dinner with all but one of them.

I had made it on that top 20 leader board and since I?ve never had dinner with Jeff, I knew that I was that one person.

Jeff Walker Product Launch Formula At the VIP dinner that night, I had a chance to get a photo with Jeff. When it was my turn, I walked up to him, shook his hand and said ?I?m Forest Linden?the one guy on your JV leader board that you haven?t had dinner with yet.?

Even though I wasn?t trying to get his attention, that?s what seemed to happen, and as soon as he made the connection his face lit up in a huge smile. ?Ohhhh?you?re the guy!? he said.

It was a great moment of connection to share with Jeff, who has literally changed my life over the last year.

Throughout the conference, I had already been getting a lot of attention from folks who sought me out to get advice on tech challenges for their businesses. But after Jeff turned the spotlight on me, the stream of awesome entrepreneurs coming up to me became a bit of a river.

It was absolutely stunning how many amazing people I got to meet.

I met a horse veterinarian, a stage and video performance coach, natural healers, yoga teachers, life coaches, realtors, marketing coaches, a stock trader, relationship coaches, and another one of my online heroes, Sonia Simone (who, along with Brian Clark and Tony Clark run Copyblogger and Teaching Sells. That?s where I first learned about creating online training programs and how to do online marketing. Without a doubt, they are the reason I?m doing Tech Husband all these years later.)

With every new person I met, my heart blew open further and further. The things they?re doing with their lives and businesses are absolutely remarkable.

When it came to talking technology, out of the 60 or so people I met and talked with this weekend, many of them asked me one of these two types of questions: 1) Which software should I use to do X (where ?X? is something like build a website, do email marketing, or sell access to an online program,) and 2) How do all these different apps work together together to make a system that will allow me to make money online?

I never get tired of answering those kinds of questions, nor do I run out of passion for helping people get the technology piece in place for their businesses. I love this stuff!

Software questions are usually the last key people need to unlock the door that leads to them making their financial and life dreams a reality.

Once they get the tech in place it?s not long before they can start making huge impacts in people?s lives with their knowledge and support. That?s my favorite part about web technology: it makes it possible for people like you and me to make big, positive impacts in people?s lives.

Often though, people tell me they?re having a hard time trying to find the best combination of web software that will allow them to get to the point where they can make money quickly and start making those positive impacts.

For example, at Jeff Walker?s conference this past weekend, I had the honor of meeting an amazing, young magician named Marco Frezza. I have a strong intuition that he?s about to do some big things in the world.

About a year ago, Marco created a series of 52 magic trick videos on Youtube for children around the world. Those videos have received over 6 million views. That?s a massive amount of views.

Each week he released a new trick and at the end of each video, one card was revealed as part of that week?s trick.

At the end of the series, he offered a prize for anyone that could name, in order, the cards that were revealed in each of the 52 videos. The top three winners would win a live magic show, and Marco would ?teleport? himself to their town to perform it.

One of the winners of the contest was a 12 year old boy who lives on a small island in Estonia, which is a small country near Finland. Marco actually flew himself there, paying for the entire journey himself, to do a magic show in the boy?s village. Unbelievable, but very true.

Nothing had ever happened like this in that village. There hadn?t even been a magician in the area since 1927. The kids there had never seen a magic show!

Marco?s teleportation and magic shows brought a wave of joy and wonder into the lives of all the children there. They will remember those shows for the rest of their lives: the time when the magician in the black pin stripe suit teleported himself all the way from America to do magic!

I was deeply moved by Marco?s story and where he?s headed with his career. The kind of impact he?s making in people?s lives is pure magic.

Over dinner with a couple of friends, Marco and I chatted at length about the best software route for him to go with his business, given what he?d like to achieve and what?s been happening with his rise in popularity.

One of the products he wants to sell is a 10 video series for kids on how to do some amazing magic tricks for their friends.

I recommended that he focus on keeping things as simple as possible in the beginning: Create the videos and put them all into one .zip file, which he can sell to his customers. They download the zip file, unzip it, and watch the videos on their computer.

The simplest way to do that is to create an account at ejunkie.com, which is one of the fastest, easiest ways to start selling downloadable, digital products on your website.

Next, Marco would upload the .zip file of the videos to the ejunkie servers and integrate a free Paypal Website Payments Standard account with his Ejunkie account.

Then, he would set a few things in the configuration of Ejunkie and copy a tiny bit of code in Ejunkie. Paste that code on a page or blog post of his website and boom, he can start selling a downloadable product. It could be a pdf file, an mp3 audio recording, or in this case, a collection of videos.

People go through the payment process in a little window that appears on top of your site and when they?re done, they get a download link for the .zip file that has the digital products in it.

In Marco?s case, kids would download the zip file and unzip it on their computer. They can then watch each of them right there, and start to go through a transformation in their lives as they become a magician, spreading wonder and joy to all their friends.

That?s what the power of technology can do when it?s combined with your desire to help people with your knowledge and gifts!

If you?re interested in learning more about how you can use the magic of web technology to make great money while you make positive impacts in people?s lives, in about a week from now,?I?m going to publish a new free video training that?s packed with awesomeness.

If you?ve ever felt frustrated from trying to understand all the tech stuff needed for an online business, this free training is going to give you some tech super powers that will bust the frustration up, Hulk-style.

Marco showed me a pretty cool teleportation trick too, so I?ll pretty much be right in the room with you during the training series :)

See you then!

New silicon-based batteries outperform current batteries: 'Crushed' porous silicon anodes show dramatic increase in charge-discharge cycles

ScienceDaily (Nov. 1, 2012) ? Researchers at Rice University have refined silicon-based lithium-ion technology by literally crushing their previous work to make a high-capacity, long-lived and low-cost anode material with serious commercial potential for rechargeable lithium batteries.

The team led by Rice engineer Sibani Lisa Biswal and research scientist Madhuri Thakur reported in Nature's open access journal Scientific Reports on the creation of a silicon-based anode, the negative electrode of a battery, that easily achieves 600 charge-discharge cycles at 1,000 milliamp hours per gram (mAh/g). This is a significant improvement over the 350 mAh/g capacity of current graphite anodes.

That puts it squarely in the realm of next-generation battery technology competing to lower the cost and extend the range of electric vehicles.

The new work by Rice through the long-running Lockheed Martin Advanced Nanotechnology Center of Excellence at Rice (LANCER) is the next and biggest logical step since the partners began investigating batteries four years ago.

"We previously reported on making porous silicon films," said Biswal, an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering. "We have been looking to move away from the film geometry to something that can be easily transferred into the current battery manufacturing process. Madhuri crushed the porous silicon film to form porous silicon particulates, a powder that can be easily adopted by battery manufacturers."

Silicon can hold 10 times more lithium ions than the graphite commonly used in anodes today. But there's a problem: Silicon more than triples its volume when completely lithiated. When repeated, this swelling and shrinking causes silicon to quickly break down.

Many researchers have been working on strategies to make silicon more suitable for battery use. Scientists at Rice and elsewhere have created nanostructured silicon with a high surface-to-volume ratio, which allows the silicon to accommodate a larger volume expansion. Biswal, lead author Thakur and co-author Michael Wong, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and of chemistry, tried the opposite approach; they etched pores into silicon wafers to give the material room to expand. By earlier this year, they had advanced to making sponge-like silicon films that showed even more promise.

But even those films presented a problem for manufacturers, Thakur said. "They're not easy to handle and would be difficult to scale up." But by crushing the sponges into porous grains, the material gains far more surface area to soak up lithium ions.

Biswal held up two vials, one holding 50 milligrams of crushed silicon, the other 50 milligrams of porous silicon powder. The difference between them was obvious. "The surface area of our material is 46 square meters per gram," she said. "Crushed silicon is 0.71 square meters per gram. So our particles have more than 50 times the surface area, which gives us a larger surface area for lithiation, with plenty of void space to accommodate expansion." The porous silicon powder is mixed with a binder, pyrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which offers conductive and structural support.

"As a powder, they can be used in large-scale roll-to-roll processing by industry," Thakur said. "The material is very simple to synthesize, cost-effective and gives high energy capacity over a large number of cycles."

"This work shows just how important and useful it is to be able to control the internal pores and the external size of the silicon particles," Wong said.

In recent experiments, Thakur designed a half-cell battery with lithium metal as the counter electrode and fixed the capacity of the anode to 1,000 mAh/g. That was only about a third of its theoretical capacity, but three times better than current batteries. The anodes lasted 600 charge-discharge cycles at a C/2 rate (two hours to charge and two hours to discharge). Another anode continues to cycle at a C/5 rate (five-hour charge and five-hour discharge) and is expected to remain at 1,000 mAh/g for more than 700 cycles.

"This successful endeavor between Rice University and Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Sensors will provide a significant improvement in battery technology by the development of this inexpensive manufacturing technique for silicon anode material," said Steven Sinsabaugh, a Lockheed Martin Fellow who works with LANCER and a co-author of the paper along with Lockheed Martin researcher Mark Isaacson. "We're truly excited about this breakthrough and are looking forward to transitioning this technology to the commercial marketplace."

"The next step will be to test this porous silicon powder as an anode in a full battery," Biswal said. "Our preliminary results with cobalt oxide as the cathode appear very promising, and there are new cathode materials that we'd like to investigate."
