A Common Sense Approach to Fitness and Nutrition | pointe ...

Ever-changing information coming from the fitness and nutrition industry these days can be very overwhelming. One day you?re told not to eat eggs because of cholesterol concerns; the next, it?s ok. (By the way, it is ok to eat eggs.) Some experts suggest working out three times per week for 30 minutes, while others say this approach is flawed. So what gives and to whom should you listen? Without getting too deep, let us consider a common sense approach to fitness and nutrition that can be backed by science.

There are three important factors when it comes to any fitness program.

First, be consistent. If you workout sporadically, you will not see change, regardless of what you do. Whatever program you choose, you must commit to it to see results.

Secondly, your workouts must be intense. Intensity has an inverse ratio with time. What this means is that if you are able to push yourself extremely hard in a workout, then your workouts don?t need to be very long. However, if you aren?t pushing very hard, you must work out for a long time.

Finally, all workout programs need variety. If you do the same exercise over and over in the same manner, your body will adapt and you will no longer see results. Choosing functional exercises that work many muscle groups at once is the best way to approach this. Which do you think is more beneficial: doing a bicep curl or doing a pull-up, which works many muscles at once? (Answer: the pull-up.) Changing exercises, the amount of weight you use, the amount of repetitions and time you spend working out consistently is the key.

Nutrition is often the most confusing when it comes to health and fitness. Simply put, we should approach nutrition how our ancestors did and the way God intended us to eat. I suggest beginning with three baby steps.

Drink lots of water. I suggest half your bodyweight in ounces. If I weigh 200 pounds, I would drink 100 ounces of water per day.

Secondly, increase the amount of protein in your diet. I have seen clients lose fat, weight and inches by changing this alone. Good sources of proteins are lean meats, fish and poultry.

Finally, cut out as many processed foods as possible. If food can sit on a shelf for six months without going bad, should we really be putting it in our body?

This isn?t rocket science, although some nutritionists and ?experts? would lead you to believe otherwise. Regardless of your goals, if you follow this common sense approach to fitness and nutrition, you will see a huge change in your life and health.

Global economy fears stalk markets

LONDON (AP) ? A run of poor economic figures weighed on markets Thursday in what is turning out to be one of the worst weeks for stocks this year.

Disappointing figures out of China and the 17-country eurozone have prompted investors to cash out of stocks, following a strong run in previous weeks. Many traders are wary of further pushing up indexes, many of which recently hit multi-month highs.

The catalyst to Thursday's retreat was a Chinese manufacturing index compiled by HSBC. Its main index fell to 48.1 in March from 49.6 in February. Figures below 50 indicate that manufacturing is contracting.

Earlier this week, soft Chinese housing data and a warning from miner BHP Billiton have stoked concerns about the outlook in the world's second-largest economy, which has shored up the global economy over the past few years.

A similarly weak eurozone survey from financial information company Markit only added to concerns. Its composite purchasing managers' index, which combines both the services and manufacturing sectors, fell to a below-forecast 48.8 points in March from 49.3 the month before.

Since stocks are a leading indicator of economic activity a few months down the line, investors are worried that the recent improvements have run out of steam.

Jane Foley, an analyst at Rabobank International, said the disappointing data would likely "instill a risk off tone for the remainder of the week."

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was down 1.1 percent at 5,829 while Germany's DAX fell 1.7 percent to 3,466. The CAC-40 in France was 1.7 percent lower at 3,466.

The euro suffered in the more risk-averse environment, trading 0.5 percent lower at $1.3151.

Wall Street was poised for a retreat, too, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures down 0.6 percent.

One potential boon from the re-evaluation in global growth prospects is that the pressure on oil prices has eased. The benchmark New York rate was down $1.39 at $105.88.

In recent weeks, the rise in oil prices had become an increasing worry in the markets as it stokes inflation and hinders economic activity.

The retreat in Asia earlier was less marked than that in Europe. The Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo ended 0.4 percent higher at 10,127.08 after Japan announced it had posted its first trade surplus in five months in February, on a recovery in auto and electronics exports to the United States.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng closed up 0.2 percent at 20,901.56 while mainland China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index slipped 0.1 percent to 2,375.77.

The drug retigabine (trade name: Trobalt) was approved in March 2011 as add-on therapy for adults with epileptic seizures. In an early benefit assessment pursuant to the "Act on the Reform of the Market for Medicinal Products" (AMNOG), the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) examined whether retigabine offers an added benefit compared with the present standard therapy. However, no such added benefit can be inferred from the dossier, as the drug manufacturer deviated from the specifications of the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) and chose a different comparator therapy.

G-BA specifies lamotrigine or topiramate as comparator therapy

Epileptic seizures are referred to as partial (or focal) seizures if they only affect a small part of the brain, and muscle twitching and cramps are restricted to single regions of the body. However, such seizures may spread across the whole body and are then referred to as "secondary generalization". Retigabine is approved as add-on therapy for the treatment of partial seizures with or without secondary generalization in persons aged 18 years and over.

The G-BA has specified lamotrigine as the appropriate comparator therapy if this drug is used as an add-on. In cases where lamotrigine is used as basic therapy, add-on topiramate is specified as the appropriate comparator therapy. The drug manufacturer did not make use of the option of seeking advice from the G-BA.

Drug manufacturer undertakes comparison with lacosamide

However, in its dossier the pharmaceutical company compared retigabine with lacosamide and thus deviated from the G-BA's specifications. From IQWiG's point of view the company did not sufficiently justify this deviation. Neither did it submit studies that would have been relevant to an assessment of retigabine versus the appropriate comparator therapy specified by the G-BA. Therefore no proof of an added benefit can be inferred from the assessment presented in the manufacturer dossier.

G-BA decides on the extent of added benefit

The procedure for inferring the overall conclusion on the extent of added benefit is a proposal from IQWiG. The G-BA, which has opened a formal commenting procedure, decides on the extent of added benefit.

The website gesundheitsinformation.de, which is issued by IQWiG, provides easily understandable brief information (German version).

The G-BA website contains both general information on benefit assessments pursuant to 35a Social Code Book V and specific information on the assessment of retigabine (German version).

NEW YORK (AP) ? Nine years ago, actress Olivia Wilde ran, or rather walked, in the EIF Revlon Run/Walk. This year she will host it for the first time when it takes to the streets of New York on May 5. Wilde joins fellow first-time ambassador Emma Stone for the event that supports women's cancer research.

"Emma and I will kick off the event and welcome everybody, then we'll participate," Wilde said of her duties, which includes pounding the pavement with thousands of participants.

Wilde says she may run alongside Stone, but only for a short time.

"Maybe Emma will run in the front, and I'll bring up the rear," Wilde joked. "I probably will have such shin splints after attempting to run I will be recovering on ice."

The EIF Revlon Run/Walk is one of the nation's largest single-day fundraisers. Each year, tens of thousands participate in its New York and Los Angeles event. The company has distributed more than $65 million to date for research projects.

Wilde says she's proud to participate because cancer has affected several women in her life and she's eager to help find a cure. She feels the best chance comes from the private sector.

"I'm optimistic that in my lifetime we will find one. Or certainly in the same way that's happened with HIV in the last 30 years where treatment has gotten to a much better place. But that can only happen if there's money behind research and that doesn't just happen magically," Wilde said.

She added: "It's incredibly important to view the influence that multinational companies like Revlon have for the greater good."

The Revlon Run/Walk comes to Los Angeles on May 12, where six-time host Halle Berry takes to the streets to help find a cure.
