Green Day, Tokio Hotel In Tight Race For Musical March Madness Gold

At this point, we probably shouldn't be surprised. After all, if anything, the 2012 Musical March Madness tournament has been a wild ride, with upsets aplenty, epic, scoreboard-busting shootouts galore and vitriolic back-and-forths between fans. So, it's fitting that our championship matchup — which pits reigning champs Green Day against unstoppable juggernaut Tokio Hotel — would play out like this.
In short, it's incredibly close. And with just hours left to go in the voting (polls close tonight at midnight ET), it's looking more and more like the 2012 title game is going to come right down to the wire. As if this whole thing could've ended any other way.
We've been keeping the numbers secret — suspense! — and we'll reveal the 2012 champion Wednesday (April 4) on MTVNews.com. But until then, let's bring you up to speed on what's already been a championship battle for the ages!
Showing that they weren't about to be intimidated by the defending champs, Tokio Hotel came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, leaping out to a commanding lead within hours of the polls opening Monday morning. Rattled, Green Day were forced to call a time-out, and after a fire-and-brimstone speech from head coach Billie Joe Armstrong — not to mention a full-court Facebook press — the East Bay boys showed their championship pedigree, closing the gap by the afternoon.
And unlike the actual March Madness championship game, this one has been a rollercoaster ride ever since, with each band seizing — and subsequently losing — the lead. At their highest point, Tokio led by nearly 200,000 votes, while Green Day's biggest advantage was less than 100,000. And in a matchup that's seen nearly 3 million votes cast already, well, you get an idea of how close this thing has been.
Right now, with hours left in the contest, it's Tokio Hotel who hold the lead, and stand on the precipice of finally hoisting the MMM trophy. Of course, given that everyone makes a run in Musical March Madness, Green Day have once again surged to within striking distance ... they're not about to let their championship reign end without a fight. But can they complete the comeback? Or will Tokio Hotel take home their first-ever championship? We're headed into the home-stretch, and, really, we have no idea. Then again, we wouldn't have it any other way; MMM 2012 has been one for the ages, and the championship game is definitely only adding to its legacy.

AP: American Express pulls gift cards from NJ
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? American Express has become the first company to pull its gift cards from New Jersey pharmacies, groceries and convenience stores rather than attempt to comply with a new wrinkle in the state's unclaimed property law.
AmEx spokeswoman Vanessa McCutchen told The Associated Press that the company began pulling gift cards sold through third-party retailers last week. As of Monday, the only way for New Jersey residents to buy AmEx gift cards, which can be used practically anywhere, is directly from the company.
New Jersey's Treasury Department will soon require sellers to obtain the ZIP code of everyone who buys a gift card. The state believes it can then lay claim to the value of any card not redeemed after two years.
John Holub, president of the New Jersey Retail Merchants Association, said the law poses serious administrative burdens to businesses and potential problems for consumers.
American Express and the Retail Merchants Association are among the groups that have sued. The case is being litigated. However, an injunction against ZIP code collections was lifted in March.
"Retailers and gift card issuers like American Express have had serious concerns about the escheat law since it was passed nearly two years ago," Holub said. "I fear many retailers are likely to follow American Express's lead because the legal risk, technological burden and steep cost of complying is simply too great."
Treasury spokesman Andy Pratt said the new policy is a work-in-progress and not designed to deter businesses from operating in the state.
"We're working with industry groups to determine the best way to have merchants collect ZIP codes," he said. "We're not requiring it until we come up with a policy that is uniform and as least onerous as possible."
However, McCutchen said there is no way AmEx can ensure compliance with cards sold through third parties.
The Legislature passed and the governor signed a law along with the budget two years ago that allows the state to claim the proceeds of gift cards bought in New Jersey if customers don't use them within two years. It saw unused gift cards, travelers' checks and money orders as an untapped revenue source and booked $79 million from the unclaimed property in fiscal 2011.
A lawsuit quickly followed and a U.S. District Court judge enjoined the collection of ZIP codes. Though the merits of the case have yet to be argued, the injunction was lifted after a subsequent hearing, paving the way for Treasury to issue guidance on new ZIP code collection requirements.
Before the legislative revision, if a gift card went unused, the issuing business kept the money.

Google again took the lead Sunday for impressive April Fools Day pranks, with its introduction of a self-driving car to compete in stock car racing, and announcing a?change to Gmail that gets rid of the pesky keyboard by "taking?26 keys to just two."
Saturday, the Web giant got a jump on the hoax-y holiday by bringing out?8-bit Google Maps for the 1980s Nintendo crowd.
Sunday, the company rolled out Google Racing, "a groundbreaking partnership with?NASCAR?to help self-driving vehicles compete in the world of stock car racing," wrote Google co-founder Sergey Brin on the company's blog. (Google does indeed have a real self-driving car.)
"We think the most important thing computers can do in the next decade is to drive cars ? and that the most important thing Google Racing can do in the next decade is drive them, if possible, more quickly than anyone else. Or anything else."
And there's more.
Google's David Brook gives you a lesson on "Gmail Tap" -- "Every letter of the alphabet is represented by a simple pattern of dots and dashes, and once you know them you can type without even looking at your screen. If the ideas sound out of this world, you have only to turn to British billionaire Richard Branson, whose company, Virgin Galactic, is set to start private passenger service to the edge of outer space in 2013.
Branson "announced" Virgin Volcanic -- to take passengers to the center of the Earth.
"Using patented carbon-carbon materials pioneered for deep space exploration, Virgin is proud to announce a revolutionary new vehicle, VVS1, which will be capable of plunging three people into the molten lava core of an active volcano," Virgin said on its website.
Branson will "go on the first expedition along with Tom Hanks, Academy Award-winning actor and star of 'Joe Versus the Volcano.' "?
The billionaire's fascination with volcanoes started when he was a lad, having read Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth," he says.
"I decided that one day I would go there too. Alongside our adventures with Virgin Galactic and Virgin Oceanic, volcanoes are the next great unexplored terrain. What can I say, I lava challenge!"

For example, Bloodhounds are a natural fit for Search, while Rottweilers are often drawn to our corporate security positions."
Eyewear company Warby Parker?also went to the dogs Sunday, becoming?"Warby Barker" with its glasses-for-dogs April Fools' joke, and on a "FAQ" page said that dog frames are available in three sizes: "Pomeranian (small), Retriever (medium) and Mastiff (large)."
