Samsung Galaxy S4 Coming To Cricket On June 7

samsung_galaxy_s_4

If you?re buying a Galaxy S4, then you?re almost spoiled for choice when it comes to deciding which carrier you wish to sign up with, because all four of the big names in the United States are offering the device. But that?s not the case if you want the handset prepaid ? at least not yet.

Next month, however, you?ll be able to purchase the Galaxy S4 on Cricket from $55 down.

The contract-free carrier today announced that it will be carrying Samsung?s latest flagship from June 7, and customers will pay just $55 upfront to start their installment plan, which will then cost as little as $45 per month.

This is a great alternative for would-be Galaxy S4 owners who do not want a two-year contract but cannot or do not want to pay the handset?s full $600 price tag in one go. However, you?ll need to live in one of Cricket?s LTE coverage areas to pick up the device.

Those areas include Las Vegas, Tucson,?Philadelphia, Phoenix, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Laredo, Corpus Christi, and the Brownsville-McAllen-Harlingen market, Texas.

?The Galaxy S4 redefines the smartphone and we are very proud to offer our customers the highest level of wireless technology on the market,? said Matt Stoiber, senior vice president of devices for Cricket. ?Cricket?s three smartphone rate plans start as low as $45 per month1 and give customers value-packed choices for the plan that?s right for them with unlimited music included.?

WVU Baseball Team Close to Okla. Twister

Baseball has always generally been at, or near, the forefront for former Madonna standout Max Nogay.

For the redshirt sophomore catcher at West Virginia University, that changed a bit Monday when the Mountaineers were in Oklahoma preparing to play in the Big 12 Tournament - the same day deadly tornadoes blew through the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore. It reportedly destroyed as many as 13,000 homes, caused as much as $2 billion in overall damage and killed 24 people.

Things changed that minute for the Mountaineers, including Nogay, Magnolia's Justin Fox and Wheeling Park's Corey Walter, who were as close as 10 miles from the tornado's path.

"The siren started to go off," Nogay said. "You go outside at 3 p.m. and it looks like it's midnight. The winds and hail were insane."

Nogay said their first thought was that they were lucky, but they immediately turned those thoughts to the victims, with first-year coach Randy Mazey leading the way. Mazey, who has done a lot of good things with the Mountaineers since he arrived on campus, is said to be an even better person than a coach.

To that end, he immediately sprang in to action, and the players followed. After all, they say adversity does not build character, it reveals it.

"Coach came up with the idea to go to Wal-Mart and fill buggies with basic essentials and deliver them personally," Nogay said. "We were all grateful we were safe these last couple days, but we're also happy we could help those people."

Mazey estimated the team collected more than $4,000 in supplies, a little more than $100 worth per person.

Photos of the gesture spread across social media the next day, with the Mountaineers - 37 of them including coaches and support staff - surrounded by anything they thought would help at a Wal-Mart checkout lane before they delivered them to Oklahoma University, where a relief site was set up.

"It was a life-changing experience," Nogay said. "It brings me to the perspective of what is important. My family and my friends and their health is much more important than baseball.

"Though it is a tragedy, we were grateful to be put in the situation," Nogay continued. "We're here to play baseball, but we were able to help people who were devastated by the tornado."

The severe weather caused a change in the tournament's schedule and format. It will begin today, rather than Wednesday as originally planned, and go from a double-elimination setup to round-robin pool play. No. 3 seeded West Virginia (31-25, 13-11) will play second-seeded Oklahoma State this afternoon.

Nogay said the Mountaineers have been though a lot - though nothing like this - and they'll be ready to turn the switch back to the game when the lights come on.

"We've had ups and downs," Nogay said. "We've had to travel every weekend (whether that's to road games or home games in Charleston at Appalachian Power Park). We've always been able to focus when the time came. That's a testament to the coaches, too. They're very good motivators.

"Coach (Mazey) was talking to us (Tuesday) night at dinner. 'We used those last few days to focus on helping those people. Now it's time to focus on baseball,"' he said.

Nogay, who has appeared in 19 games for the surprising Mountaineers, encourages everyone to keep the victims in mind.

"I ask everyone back home to pray for them and do everything they can to help out," he said.

LoJack launches phone recovery service, Galaxy S4 first supported device

Samsung Galaxy S4

Embedded system increases the chances that devices will be recovered after theft

Absolute Software, the makers of the LoJack theft recovery service, announced today that through a partnership with Samsung it will be offering its services to all Galaxy S4 handsets. The service, which was previously targeted at desktop and laptop computers, is making the move into the mobile space with one of the most popular devices out today. Unlike other services that can pretty easily be removed when a phone is factory reset, the LoJack system is embedded at the firmware level and will survive any tampering or attempts to remove it by a criminal.

Beyond just making sure that the phone is traced, locked and remotely wiped, you'll get the expertise of LoJack's years of experience in tracking stolen property. When we spoke to LoJack representatives here at CTIA they said they've recovered laptops in as little as 40 minutes, and as long as four and a half years after they were stolen. That just shows the determination of the people behind this service.

While it is embedded in every Galaxy S4 device, it won't be available to be activated until "early this summer". LoJack isn't releasing specific pricing at this point, but has indicated that the service will start at $29.99 with multiple subscription options ranging from 1 to 4 years at a time.

Digital and the the desire for long form journalism - David Campbell

The world is at her fingertips

The disruption of the Internet, the turn to online news sources, and the global spread of mobile technology are sometimes seen as producing a new age of distraction and superficiality.

Without claiming that these are in fact the best of times for visual storytellers, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that contemporary developments are building on and encouraging a healthy appetite for engagement with news and information.

Here is what we found in the World Press Photo/Fotografen Federatie multimedia research project (see section 2 of the report for details and sources):

  • Over the last two decades ? and consistent throughout that period ? American data shows people enjoy reading (51% say they enjoyed it a lot), and there has been no decrease in the number reading a book on a typical day (c. 30%). Now, though, the proportion (currently 20%) reading those books via electronic devices is growing
  • In Europe and the US there is a strong appetite for news, with 75% or more of people accessing news daily
  • International news is a topic of interest for 44%+ in Europe and the US
  • At least two-thirds of the 16-24 age group in Europe and the US are interested in news, so the future is not so bleak as sometimes feared.

Significantly mobile technology is helping to cultivate this appetite for news:

  • accessing news is one of top things mobile consumers do
  • it increases the amount of news they consume
  • it increases the number of longer stories they read
  • organisations like the Wall Street Journal report people spend at least as much time (40-50 mins) on their tablet app as they did with the printed paper.

Web video is the subject of current debate, with some producers questioning its value. That argument makes some good creative points that need to be examined in more detail, although there is wide variation in what counts as ?web video.? But it is clear that news consumers like linear video. Media organisations we surveyed repeatedly said it was one of the two most popular formats for people coming to their sites. As a result many media organisations (especially those formerly known as newspapers) are investing heavily in video production. All this makes online video the fastest growing multimedia format, with encouraging audience behaviour for those producing stories:

  • News is a popular category on YouTube (it was the most searched for item in four out of 12 months in 2011)
  • There is no strict correlation between length of video and popularity ? one-third of popular videos were 2-5 minutes in length, and nearly one fifth were longer than 5 mins
  • Oyala, a large video streaming platform, reported that long form videos of 10 minutes+ accounted for 57% of viewing time on tablets they served
  • Multimedia completion rates can also be good: MediaStorm says that more than half, and often two-thirds, of those viewing their stories online stay with them to the end, even when stories run up to 20 or more minutes.

We can also point to studies commissioned by the Associated Press demonstrating that audiences desire breadth, context and depth ? news consumers feel they have the headlines and what they want is the background.?To that end, they value the depth visuals (both still and moving) can bring.

This shows the audience is out there, they have an appetite for visual stories, and are consuming long form journalism and video.?This does not mean the audience for visual stories can be easily found or quickly engaged. It still takes a good story, and one that is accessible to as many as possible.?But both audience desire and our ability to reach them is being encouraged by the digital transformations many feared would have a negative effect on the future of visual stories.

This is the seventh in a series of posts highlighting the content of ?Visual Storytelling in the Age of Post-Industrial Journalism?, the World Press Photo/Fotografen Federatie study of?the global emergence and development of multimedia in visual storytelling, especially photojournalism. The posts are searchable with the ?Multimedia Research Project? tag.

WASHINGTON (AP) ?

Wind, humidity and rainfall combined precisely to create the massive killer tornado in Moore, Okla. And when they did, the awesome amount of energy released over that city dwarfed the power of the atomic bomb that leveled Hiroshima.

Meteorologists contacted by The Associated Press used real time measurements to calculate the energy released during the storm's life span of almost an hour. Their estimates ranged from 8 times to more than 600 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb.

Scientists know the key ingredients that go into a devastating tornado. But they are struggling to figure out why they develop in some big storms and not others. They also are still trying to determine what effects, if any, global warming has on tornadoes.

3D printed photographs: a new twist on your holiday snaps

3D printed photos look great, but not how you think

Got hordes of old photos you don't know what to do with? Well, if you've got access to a 3D printer, what about blessing them with a third dimension? That's what Instructables stalwart Amanda Ghassaei (of 3D printed records fame) has done using an Objet Connex500, some algorithmic wizardry and a bit of left field thinking. The images, rather than full 3D renderings, are still meant to be viewed in 2D, but use different thicknesses of print to create a silhouette effect. Ghassaei converts images to black and white, and assigns different printing densities to each grayscale pixel value. The results are surprisingly intricate, and do still impart a sense of texture. Fortunately for those interested in doing their own, this is Instructables, so, all you need to do is follow along at the source.

'DWTS' pro Val: 'It's a good time' to win

"Dancing With the Stars" pro Val Chmerkovskiy.

Steffen Thalemann

"Dancing With the Stars" pro Val Chmerkovskiy.

Dancing With the Stars" pro Valentin Chmerkovskiy will be blogging about his experiences and thoughts on his fourth quest for the mirror ball trophy on TODAY.com throughout the season. The 14-time US champion in dance is paired with 16-year-old Disney star Zendaya, who plays Rocky Blue on "Shake It Up!"

I want to particularly thank the fans this time around because they literally got us into the finals. Score-wise last week, we weren't at the top, nowhere near the top. We?re very fortunate and lucky to have incredible fans that care about us and want to see us dance one more time.

I want to take a second to compliment Zendaya on her composure throughout all of this. I?m trying to keep my composure and it?s really hard for me. I can imagine how challenging it is for her, as she has other responsibilities!

We haven?t talked about that enough, about the fact that she?s 16 years old, and not in the way that you?re like ?Hey! You?re 16!? No, she?s 16? It?s finals week. She?s going every day from 8 in the morning to 12 at night, taking standardized testing. She?s in 11th grade. She?s taking SATs, ACTs. Her brain is fried by the time she gets to rehearsal --- AND we?ve still got four dances to learn!

We have to redo the samba with new choreography. Samba is not an easy dance at all. When we talk samba, naturally, she remembers the old choreography. Now she has to remember the new choreography and the style of dance. On top of that there has to be an incredible freestyle which I made really, really difficult because that?s what it takes to win the show, along with two other dances that we need to prepare. It?s really crazy man, really, really crazy. So I just want to take a second to breathe and acknowledge the work that she?s done and if these rehearsals are tough on me they are most definitely tough on her. I think the mind is very important. The mind, unfortunately, can?t work without the body. So it?s very important to rest and it?s very important to eat right. The only thing I?m eating right now that keeps my brain and body running are these all natural KIND Nuts & Spices bars, especially the Dark Chocolate Chili Almond. It tastes so good and keeps me energized throughout these exhausting rehearsals.

It?s finale time but this finale is different -- completely different. Last season it was bitter, but then it became quickly sweet. I hate losing, but losing to someone like Tony (Dovolani) and Melissa (Rycroft) was a great feeling for me. That?s my brother pretty much, and I?m super happy for him to win because it was long overdue! I had no right -- even just out of respect for Tony, to feel even one inch of, ?Oh, it?s not fair!? I have the utmost love and appreciation for that champion.

But this season, I feel like it?s a good time. I don?t feel like it?s too early, I don?t feel like it?s too late. It?s a good time. I feel like if the stars can?t align this time, I?m not sure when they?ll align again. I know I said that last season with Kelly (Monaco) because she was incredible and we had an amazing season, but I never thought I?d be able to follow it up. Zendaya, complete polar opposite of what Kelly and I were, was able to follow up and follow it up in a very unique way.

There has never been a couple like us. This final between my three competitors ? between them, they have about 30 seasons and six trophies. But when you look at Zendaya and I, you have never seen a champion like that.

If we win, the generosity and gratefulness that will be pouring out of my body at that moment will be overwhelming for everybody in the room. I will drown people in my appreciation!

So vote for us and let?s make it happen!

(AP) ? Associated Press journalists open their notebooks at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival:

A DIFFERENT TUNE FOR TIMBERLAKE

In the Coen brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis," Justin Timberlake sings music set to a very different beat than "Suit and Tie."

Timberlake plays a bearded pop folkie in the film, which was to premiere Sunday night at the Cannes Film Festival, about the music scene of early 1960s Greenwich Village. Oscar Isaac stars as a more serious but less successful folk musician than Timberlake's smiley Jim Berkey.

Speaking to reporters Sunday, Timberlake called Berkey "part of the transition that is sort of the underbelly of the time." The film summons the period of New York folk just before Bob Dylan arrived in the early '60s.

"Obviously, it's on the surface, a different style from the music that I make in real life," said Timberlake. "But listen, man. I grew up in Tennessee, the home of the blues, the birthplace of rock 'n' roll ? Memphis ? and a lot of country music. So my first musical lessons were given to me by my grandfather on an old Gibson guitar. He taught me how to fingerpick."

Timberlake helped write the music to the film's most comical song, "Please, Mr. Kennedy," which he sings with Isaac and Adam Driver of "Girls." The oft-repeated chorus goes: "Please, Mr. Kennedy, don't shoot me into outer space."

Timberlake got reflective about the curious mix of talent, luck and timing that goes into a music act breaking out. In contrast to the success Timberlake has had in music and acting, the characters of "Inside Llewyn Davis" are those for whom things never click.

"I've been in the right place and met the wrong people, and I've been in the wrong place and met the right people," the former boy band singer said. "Usually, the second one ends up being the thing that can catapult someone's career."

Timberlake suggested disregarding how one's work is received.

"There's a lot of analysis now, a lot of analytics on what might be success and what might be failure," he said. "I don't know that I would measure the success or failure of it by how it's perceived because once it's done, it's sort of out there. You have to let it live in the ether."

? Jake Coyle, http://twitter.com/jake_coyle

Young British actor George MacKay is making a splash at Cannes ? literally, amid the weekend's torrential downpours ? with his compelling central performance in the mythic maritime drama "For Those In Peril."

Set in a fishing town on the stark Scottish coast, Paul Wright's debut feature stars 21-year-old MacKay as sole survivor of a boat accident that killed five others, including his elder brother. MacKay carries the intense and poetic film as a young man struggling to cope with loss, even as his survival alienates him from his bereaved neighbors.

"You got our film and our weather, too," MacKay joked, sitting in a wind-whipped beachside cafe during interviews for the film in Cannes.

Playing in Cannes' Critics' Week competition, the movie has garnered strong reviews for its exploration of guilt, masculinity and mythology.

It's a mature and meaty role for MacKay, who got his movie start aged 10 as one of the Lost Boys in P.J. Hogan's 2003 adaptation of "Peter Pan," shot at Warner Bros' studios on Australia's Gold Coast.

"It was mad. They built a pirate ship ? it was extraordinary. I think, the fact that we were 10, I don't think we realized how ridiculous the scale (was)," said MacKay, who also appeared alongside Clive Owen in 2009 family drama "The Boys Are Back."

"For Those in Peril" was a much smaller-scale operation, shot over six weeks in a small town in northeast Scotland ? and, for several key sequences, in the cold North Sea.

The boundlessly enthusiastic MacKay says even the frigid water scenes were made bearable by "lots of cups of tea ... lots of towels, lots of food."

"We were kept safe," he said. "We were out in the middle of the ocean doing it and we had the water safety guys come ? very dramatic ? shooting across in their little (boat), whack you out and wrap you in towels. It was all good."

And the town had a bonus: "Best fish and chips you've ever had."

(AP) ? Orb came up short in the Preakness, frustrating everyone who made the Kentucky Derby winner a 3-5 favorite ? no one more than trainer Shug McGaughey.

"I'm disappointed," McGaughey said after Orb finished fourth and Oxbow pulled off the upset Saturday.

"I'll be more disappointed tomorrow than I am right now. I know the game. It is highs and lows. Probably more lows than highs."

McGaughey and Orb were certainly on a high in the two weeks since the Derby. The colt had trained sensationally ahead of the Preakness, fanning hopes that a horse was finally going to end the Triple Crown drought that dates back to Affirmed in 1978.

Orb needed a Preakness win to set the stage for a Triple try three weeks later in the Belmont Stakes. He couldn't deliver, despite the outpouring of support at Pimlico as fans cheered loudly when he led the post parade.

He never settled into a groove. Orb broke from the rail and didn't seem comfortable being surrounded by horses.

In the Derby, Orb unleashed a breathtaking rally around the final turn, circling the field on a sloppy track to win by 2? lengths.

But there was no explosive move in the Preakness, only a mild kick in the late stages to make a dull effort appear a little better than it was.

"The pace was slower than I anticipated," McGaughey said. "I thought maybe they would speed it up, but they didn't. I still thought he would close into it, but it just wasn't his day."

McGaughey, as gracious as he's been throughout the Orb run, saluted fellow Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas on the victory.

"We had a great run two weeks ago," McGaughey said. "My hats off to Wayne, winning his sixth Preakness. That's a pretty remarkable record."

McGaughey will take Orb back to his home base at Belmont Park and figure out the next move. He is left with the feeling that something special slipped away.

"I would be disappointed anytime you had this kind of opportunity, and didn't get it done," he said.

The loss ended Orb's five-race winning streak that included victories in the Fountain Of Youth Stakes and Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. He was the 5-1 favorite in the Kentucky Derby, and that impressive win dropped his Preakness odds.

Orb was only McGaughey's third Preakness starter, and first since 1989 when Easy Goer, also a 3-5 favorite, lost by a nose to Sunday Silence.

Gap Employees Will Someday Be Replaced By This T-Shirt Folding Bot

Great news for anyone who's ever felt ignored by snooty Gap employees that seem more interested in what's happening in their headsets than their customers. To celebrate its one year anniversary, ROS Industrial put together this highlight reel of its robots in action, including a bit showing this arm deftly folding a shirt.

The demo is meant to show off the robot's capabilities, but like with most industries it also demonstrates that humans can be easily replaced. In fact, all it needs is a vintage hat and a few more tattoos and the arm should easily breeze through the interview process. [ROS Industrial via IEEE Spectrum]
