Police spokesman Guenther Beck said the man opened fire in the Dachau administrative court trial.

Beck said he did not know what specific security measures the court had nor how the defendant managed to get inside with a gun.

He said the shooter, a Dachau resident about whom no other details were available, shot the 31-year-old Munich prosecutor several times, killing him.

He said there were no reports of other injuries in the courtroom.

Police overpowered the shooter took him into custody.

The AFP news agency reported that Ken Heidenreich, a spokesman for the Munich public prosecutor's office, had said the shooter was on trial for allegedly embezzling $55,800 in employee contributions that should have been paid to the healthcare and pension system in Germany.

AFP reported that in April 2009, a 60-year-old man killed a female relative and himself at a court hearing in the city of Landshut during a dispute over inheritance.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
